Hey allergy sufferers,

I am 36 and I started developing food allergies over 2 years ago. I'm a southern girl and I love pecan anything. Pecan pie, pecan pralines, pecans on cereal, pecans on sweet potato cassarole, pecan on cinnamon roll.  I kept a food journal for a year or 2 and suspected that pecans, bananas, and strawberries were making me sick so I compleatly eliminated them from my diet. So I have been feelin pretty good for a while so I thought it would b okay. So I made some waffles this morning and thought hmm.... these would b good with some pecans in um. I sprinkled about 4 crushed pecan on my waffle and it was delicious! Now my body feels like I've been dropped off a building. Achy like the flu. No breathing reaction just body pain.  Does anyone else get body pain w/food allergy? Others on this forum have suggested  a food diary and it really does help narrow down the list of what could be making you sick. But if you think you are allergic to a certain food u probably are, so don't think its just going to go away and eat some pecans 2 years later because they still make me feel like crap. Goodbye pecans, me and you are over.

Hi allergygirl, welcome to the forum.

So glad you are doing the food journal. I hope you see an allergist for advice, as we aren't doctors, just patients. At least pecans aren't supposed to be related to the rest of the tree nuts, so I hope you can find substitutes you can tolerate.

Do you get the mouth, throat swelling, or do you just feel sick? Intolerance is way easier to live with than "true" allergy. I get mouth symptoms from sunflower seeds - acquired true allergy from feeding birds. My esophagus and stomach and lower gut react to other foods, and I get sick feeling from lactose.

My "true" allergy symptoms can be controlled with Benadryl and Alavert, probably some other antihistamines. I need Lactaid pills if I eat any form of ice cream or frozen yogurt, and the pills don't help much, even taking 6 of them. I need heart medication (atenolol) when I eat sulfite because I get rapid heart beat - 140 - 160 bpm, and have had to go to ER for cardioversion. Still, that's not considered a "true" allergy symptom.

When this allergy problem first started when I ate pecans I would get little red dots in the back of my mouth and ulcers and pressure in my ears? weird. I was diagnosed with allergic asthma but never went to get a food allergy test done because (no insurance) and it was expensive. So I just try to avoid those foods, I just thought since I was feelin good it would b okay. not so.
That heart rate thing you were talkin about is pretty scary. I had an allergic fit to dust mites went to ER, coughing, couldn't breathe, and my heartrate was close to 180 I thought I was gonna die! i'm sure the panic didn't help either.

well im goin on, and on, I need to get off here. Right now I just have bodyaches.

I sure gonna miss some good ol southern pecan pie with rum in it. Delicious. oh well at least I still have Chocolate! Byebye

And another thing occurred to me, have I made myself allergic to pecans by eating too many over the years? Same with Strawberries and Banannas. If I eat a banana I can hardly breathe. When I used to b able to eat them all the time.

Yes, that is possible to do...anything eaten frequently has the potential to become an allergen given the right set of circumstances (i.e., inflammation in the gut from food poisoning, infections, etc.).
