Coughing and Asthma

ok...so in reading what my pulmonologist has given me and what I have read online I keep seeing that coughing is a symptom of asthma. I feel like this is one of my major symptoms...In seeing that, I remember the many conversations I have had with my husband, family, and friends about my coughing. I guess this has been asthma related.

My question is this...how does one know when coughing is because of asthma and not for another reason?

I know that seems like a silly question...and maybe it's an, "oh duh" question. I don't know. But, I thought I'd through it out and see what ppl say.

Coughing is your body's reflex to get rid of an irritation, sort of like sneezing...So while there are many reasons for coughs to occur, one of the reasons is asthma.

So, how do you know when you're coughing bc of asthma or coughing for another reason?
I don't understand how you know the difference. Is there even a difference?

You can usually tell when you are coughing from an irritation, or from asthma.  Now not always, but most of the time, asthma comes from the bronchioles spasming and then producing extra mucus in the bronchiole, that's what makes you cough, so it sort of gets irritated down the center of your chest and you can feel that when you cough, you may cough up mucus, and/or you may start a wheezing, or chest tightness that makes you feel very uncomfortable.  Using your emergency inhalor like Albuterol will usually help this.

does anyone have any hints to help with asthma coughing? Even though I use my inhaler I wake up several time a night. Ive pulled muscles under my rib cage from coughing so much. Im feeling a little overwhelmed and depressed about the whole thing. Im tired of coughing. Im thinking maybe someone else that has asthma may have some suggestions to help with getting through the night without coughing.

Hi anna1 and Welcome to HealingWell!! yeah

 

You mention using an inhalor a lot-is that your emergency inhalor?  If you are having coughing that much that you have a need to continuously use an emergency inhalor-you need to be seen by your Dr.!!

 

There are plenty of other treatments that are offered depending upon the cause of your problem.  One of the first things might be that you need to get an injection of steroids, so that it's fast acting to help your cough, or the Dr. may decided to put you on a course of steroids like Prednisone.

 

There are also other inhalors that can be used on a daily basis, plus medication that can be used.  You really need to pay a visit to your Dr. and see what he/or she advises!!

Sometimes they also recommend a nebulizer which is a machine that you put medication into to open the airways and it helps you get the medication in deeper into the lungs. You also may want to try taking a very warm shower, to loosen the secretions. Teri

I was coughing a lot and my docotor put me on advair 2 x daily and it helped. Every once in a while i will still wake up coughing but not like I use to.

hi i am new,and have asthma which began with just uncontrollabe coughing. soon later, i started coughing up green stuff which i knew was infection.i also started coughing up frothy white stuff in some of my bad attacks which happened with changes of temperatures like going from a/c to heat and smells. i tried to explain this to my family doctor for about 5 years,and have been on every med from pulmacort and alzacort and it came down to advair 500/50 and spiriva.

 the point i want to make is that when a new family doctor heard me he did chest x-rays and a breathing test. I have copd(chronic bronchitis) secondary to severe asthma. my lungs only work a third fo what they should, damage been done.

 just make sure EVERONE HERE,  knows they have asthma and not copd.,and take your meds. once the lung damage has been done, it is irreversiable. nono

Asthma an allergy or something else? Where do I go from here?

I was diagnosed as asthmatic in my teens Im now 53.For the last 20  years Ive been almost symptom free,& not needing any medication e xcept the very ocassional use of a reliever inhaler.

6 years ago I was diagnosed with Parkinson's and take 1mg of Pergolide 3xday & 1 mg Rasagiline.

After a general anaesthetic 7 months ago (gall bladder removal) I had a severe chest infection, which left me with a  chronic productive cough. 3 courses of antibiotics, a long course of Prenisolone and several different types of inhaled steroids ( currently Symbicort)  & I am still coughing.

GP thought I might  have Alpha-1 antytrypsin (what??)

I have had a chest xray (clear), 3  sputum samples (all clear), a bronchoscopy (inconclusive -though 1 lung full of mucus & inflammmed) Ive have an echiocardiogram & an ecg both normal. Iam waiting for lung function tests.

I cough & cough until I vomit-its especially bad in the mornings. plus I have a foul taste in my mouth all the time & I wheeze. It doesnt seem to respond to steroids & is not at all like the asthma I am used to.

I thought it might be a reaction to the pergolide (cough a known side effect)- but the consultant says its the wrong sort of cough.

Could it be GERD causing these symptoms?

Does anyone else have any experience of Asthma like this? Its making me feel so low.

i too,have asthma,and was diagnosed with copd a few years ago. but i have some wheezing though chest is clear,but started all this with a cough,that was so bad,sometimes i was almos to the point of throwing up. this happened with change of climates for instance going from air condition to hot,or vice versa, certain smells,or exercising. if you have a productive cough,espiecally in the morning, you might want to make sure you don't have chronic bronchitis,which is part of copd(chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) then again,you may just have allergies. all this started with me,was with allergies,and sinus infections.

all i know is that i had symptoms very similiar,and i was diagnosed with severe asthma,and copd(chronic bronchitis) i also have sleep apnea,and chronic sinustis. i sleep with oxygen and a cpap at night. the lung function test should tell how good your lungs are,that is what told my doctor,along with the oxygen level test,what was going on with me. i still cough,but nothing like i used to,i take advair twice a day,and spriva,and sleep with my cpap,and oxygen.
