Hi,
I've been having sinus issues and am wondering if anyone is the same.  Some background...Years ago, i had an issue where I was congested for about 3 months.  Finally my GP sent me to an ENT dr.  He never said what was wrong aside from inflammation in my sinuses (which is a common theme in my body), but prescribed nasonex and after 3 months of being congested, no smell or taste, it cleared it up.  I also suffer from asthma which is only triggered when (and everytime) I get a cold.  It shows itself as a tickly cough and also will not go away until I take meds (advair).  Often the two issues go together.

Recently I've been having issues with my sinuses where they're blocked during the night and it takes me about 2hrs to clear it in the morning (saline rinse and just keep trying to blow my nose to get rid of the thick yellow mucus..sorry if tmi).  Then I'm fine for the rest of the day.  I have been using my nasonex to try and keep my nose clearer at night...which does seem to help, but I still always have the issue.

Also, don't know if it means anything but my left nostril is more blocked than my right.  Very strange as you'd think that if there's mucus, it would be produced evenly in your nose.

Anyone else experience this same issue at night?  Why just at night? And antything different I can do?

Thanks in advance.

Everyone in my house suffers from allergies. Right around 8-9pm, our sinuses start to clog. My daughter's allergist once told me that in the evening, airborne allergens settle down closer to the ground - in the house or outside. It gets more concentrated. Have you tried any oral allergy meds? Even if you don't have allergies (which it sounds like you do), allergy meds can keep things clearer.

Thanks Red. Do you mean the over the counter allergy meds?

Yes, you can try those. There is hardly a prescription allergy med that you can't buy otc now. But there is Clariten, Allegra and Zyrtec. Perhaps a decongestant would work as well (Clariten D, Allegra D or Zyrtec D). Are you sure you don't have a sinus infection? The thick yellow mucous is usually an indicator of an infection.

Hi Red.

No idea if it's a sinus infection.  I spoke too soon as today the thick yellow congestion has been all day (but its different from a cold)

If it's been consistent, personally, in my opinion, it sounds like a sinus infection. Whenever I get a sinus infection (which I've had 2 already this year due to my 6mp/Remicade combo) the doc puts me on the Z-pack and it takes care of it within 2-3 days. Perhaps you should see your GP?

Today it's bad again...my nose is like a dam (i.e. I blow and it fills up again)...still the thick yellow mucus.  Up until now, i'ts only been at night and now, yearsterday and today, it's been all the time.  I do feel ok otherwise though (e.g. no fever, headache, etc)...just the full feeling in my nose, which I guess is a bit of that pressure feeling and that post nasal drip feeling.  I'm trying my nasonex regularly (morning and night) and if it doesn't clear up, I"ll go to a walk in (GP isn't near by).  Only hope I don't lose my taste on the weekend as it's my anniversary and we're going out to celebrate.  Really appreciate your advice and things to consider.

Do you open your windows at night to cool the house off? That could explain why they are aggravated when you're about to sleep. You should take a look at ventilation/filtration for your house to stop pollen and other allergens. If you can stop it at the source you might not need to take the various meds. An energy/heat recovery ventilator could filter and keep the house cool too...

Hi midfield. No, we keep our windows closed and use AC. Thanks for the thought.

Like many people my allergies get worse in the evening and make it difficult to breath all night long, but in the middle of the day I’m fine or at least functional.  Does this sound familiar?

Our bodies are on cycles, it ramps up in the morning producing the hormones and chemicals we need to function through the day and it ramps down at night since we don’t need these hormones while we sleep.  Included in these are epinephrine and adrenaline, along with a list of others that I can’t remember right now.   As your body ramps down it also becomes more receptive to histamine which is part of the immune system’s inflammation response to foreign matter including viruses and bacteria.

Unfortunately in people with allergies the histamine sees pollen (or whatever you’re allergic to) as an invading threat and reacts to destroy it just as it would when you have a cold.

Hi, Lu.

My sinuses get congested at night too, and I've had sinus surgery (which only made things worse).

The problem with heat and with air conditioning is that it drys the air and mucus gets thicker. I do better in spring and fall when not much heat or cooling is needed. Antihistamines only dry the sinuses up worse.

So, my treatment is using a saline wash (not just a little spray or rinse) every morning, sometimes evening too, and taking generic Mucinex 12 hour in the evening. The Mucinex keeps the mucus liquid so the cilia in the sinuses and nose can move it. I prefer the large Neil Med bottle because it has enough pressure to clear the sinuses better.

Do NOT use tap water in any sinus wash! Brain-eating ameba has been found in many water systems even in the north. Use only water that has been boiled or sterilized.
