Like many on this forum I want to let you know what worked (and didn't work) for me.  Hives started in January 2012 - they are finally getting better now in September 2012.  I think they started after receiving antibiotics after a root canal.  I tried all kinds of different remedies.  What finally seemed to work was when I read Food is Your Best Medicine by Dr. Henry Beiler.  The following recommendations are from his book.

For Healing
Give a fair amount of digestable food while trying to neutralize toxemia with
vegetable or fruit antidotes - depends on the specific condition of each person
1 Don't eat too much - let the liver get rid of toxins.
2 General rest - let your body recover
3 Take yeast (it's a vegetable) on an empty somach - recommended for skin disorders.
4 Beiler's Broth - full of sodium (from vegetables) to help
the endocrine system (adrenals, thyroid & pituitary)
5 Eating one kind of food at a time is easier to digest
6 Raw milk (it's a food)
7 Don't drink too much water - overtaxes kidneys and doesn't allow body to rid itself of toxins.
8 Raw or lightly cooked egg yolks
9 Fresh Air
10 Sunshine
Foods to Eat
1 Vegetables, especially green, leafy vegetables
2 Raw milk
3 Fresh fruit (in moderation)
4 Small portions of lightly cooked meats (especially beef and lamb)
5 Large portions of steamed vegetables
6 Green salads w/raw vegetables
7 Whole grain Breads
8 Eat protein - but not too much
9 Unsalted butter is the best fat
10 Raw or lightly cooked eggs
Foods to Avoid
1 Sugar This is a stimulant to my body - drawn to it for that reason - but I feel worse later.
2 Salt
3 White Flour
4 Heated Oils
5 Water with additives
6 Spices
7 Pepper
8 Ice Cream, specifically
9 Cheese
10 Synthetic Vitamins
General  Recommendations
1 Do not take supplements
2 Avoid irritating food and drink
3 Avoid stimulants (coffee, tea, chocolate, even spices).
(Increases energy temporarily, but exhausts endocrine
  system - adrenals, thyroid, pituatary)
4 Don't eat more than one protein at a meal (like meat & cheese).
5 Don't eat too many nuts - hard to digest
Other Information
1 Skin disease is a sign of toxic irritation.  It responds
well to treatment directed toward neutralization
and elimination of poisons.  This corrects thyroid.
Thyroid can force toxins out through the skin
and mucous membranes.
2 The tongue is the barometer of the liver.

No need for extra vitamins or salt if you eat properly.

I tried Prednisone, Benadryl, the water cure and just about everything else.  As of this date (09/14/2012), I have not taken Benadryl in 49 days and have been completely hive free for 8 days.  Every once in a while, I'll get one, but those days are getting less and less.

Hope this helps someone, chronic hives can be miserable.
