What are my options and what long-term effects exist?

Hi All,

I'm new here! I have been trying to take control of my allergies for years now. I've had surgery for my allergies but a year later my sinuses look the same on the CT scan as they did before (basically I have no open space). I've had an allergy test (allergic to trees, grass, pets - stuff I can't really avoid :/). I can't do allergy shots because my allergies are too severe. I suppose I could risk doing shots but they may cause a bad reaction or just not work. Just the allergy test caused me to get quite sick. Allergy drops may be an expensive option.

Right now I am on Singulair, Allegra and Nasonex. They help with the congestion tremendously and I can breathe well. However, I still have no sense of smell and I still experience fatigue and facial pain. I find exercise helps well too so I have become an avid runner. I don't use any fragrances.

I was on a at-home Nebulizer for a month and it did work pretty much immediately. I got my sense of smell back and I felt great. I was prescribed steriods and antibiotics for the nebulizer.

I don't want to be on meds forever because I am worried about long-term effects of everything I am taking. However, the nebulizer was the first thing to really work and I am tempted to see if I can just keep taking that. I hope to see my dr next week to discuss this. So here are my questions:

1. Are there long-term effects to using allergy meds and nasonex daily?
2. Are there long-term effects to using nebulizers daily with steroids?
3. Has anyone tried allergy drops? Good or bad?
4. Are there any other options for me that don't include meds forever? I don't expect you guys to really know the answer but I'd love to hear other people's experiences on what worked. I am open to anything.

Thanks everyone for your input. My goal this year is to get these allergies under control. Right now I feel like my life revolves around them. :(

1. Are there long-term effects to using allergy meds and nasonex daily?
*I've been on allergy meds for 20 plus years.

2. Are there long-term effects to using nebulizers daily with steroids?
*If a nebulizer helps you breath use it. Long term uses of high doses of steroids does take a toll on your body. What's the dosage you're on?

3. Has anyone tried allergy drops? Good or bad?
*Haven't tried them, but I was allergic to the shots myself.

4. Are there any other options for me that don't include meds forever?
*From the sound of it you need the medicines.

Have you tried a sinus saline wash like NeilMed or a neti pot? You might get some great relief from that.
