That only started about 1 1/2 years ago at the age of 57, after having NO issues my entire life.. winter of 2011-12 I came down with what I believe to have been Pertussis.. I got a small cold, and then started coughing very badly.. I didn't stop coughing for about 3 1/2 months.. terrible cough, until I was exhausted, and my lungs were burning.. All day every day. Lost my sense of smell and taste as well and its still probably 90% gone..
Pertussis was going around the school system I work at, I am a school bus driver, and the district nurse said most likely that is what I had...
That seemed to have triggered something... Now , about 19-20 months later, I still can't breathe.. Nasal congestion that never eases especially in the right nostril.. the ENT keeps saying I am very swollen in the nasal passages,, but steroid sprays or Prednisone dose pack has not help even a little.. I was just allergy tested, and I am allergic to EVERYTHING,, Dust mites, ragweed. several types of mold, several trees, dandelions, cats, and about anything else you can name.. I was allergic to NOTHING before that pertussis episode..
Am I really destined to awake in a panic every night at 3 am because my sinuses have completely closed while I slept???.. I can't "blow my nose" either.. this seems like a dry clog if that makes any sense.. Typically, after a few minutes sitting up, or walking, I will clear in one nostril or the other enough to where I can get enough flow to get back to bed.. Other times, I can't get to sleep.. Its been awful, and I really do not enjoy life any longer.. I also have Tinnitus.. very severely.. Its been classified as "catastrophic".. I hear it 24/7, above everything else, and it is too loud to be masked by even very loud sounds.. It started summer of 2011, due to a very loud life.. So now at 59. I can't breathe, can't smell or taste, and have screeching, piercing sirens in my head until I die... Life isn't fair to some of us.. about 26 months ago, I was in great health and looked to be 45.. Now I look older than my 59 years, and feel like I'm 90...
anyway, Is there ANY help from any drugs/ steroids, treatments? Claratin/? Or will I need to sit in a sterile, dry, filtered room, just in the hope that maybe my sinuses will clear up a bit??.. any advise would be appreciated.. Sorry for the bummer post, but it is what it is... bob

Destined to wake nightly in panic attacks, no hon you are not. And welcome to Healing Well! Perhaps a mri of your sinus' will be helpful. I have a friend, she had to get a sinus surgery due to similar symptoms. Is that an option for you? I honestly don't know because I am not a doctor.. The sirens perhaps is a migraine. Maybe you can see a neuro and an allergist. I'm 32 and feel 80 so don't worry about that. I personally don't know how to clear your sinuses by otc, as I am not a doctor. If I were you, I'd keep bugging the doctors til its all solved...

thanks for the reply.. Doctors have been of little benefit... The sirens in my brain are from my tinnitus which is unrelated to my allergies.. My life has been way too loud for way too long, and I paid the price..

I will keep going to the docs I suppose, but I have my doubts.. I don't think bagging the mattress and installing a HEPA filter will fix me up.. we'll see... bob

I think you should give a try to an air purifier and buy an hypoallergenic mattress cover. I also had a sudden increase of all my allergies and became hypersensitive to dust and pollen. I take inhalers regularly because of that and I also have a nasal spray.I guess you alrealdy tried the nasal spray. Else I would suggest you try to lower your anxiety, it seems to worsen things when you already have a problem. Little yoga exercises on the internet helped me, and trying to sleep early eat at regular times etc. I am also very careful with food especially since I have lots of food allergies but it's healthier not to eat processed foods in your case too. Some say that removing diary and gluten from your diet helps decreasing inflammation. Good luck!
