Would like to get some opinions from people on this forum.  Based on the 8 month history I gathered for my daughter would you say she has Asthma?  I recently started getting AM and PM tests because I read an article that said to compare AM and PM results.

The main problem I have is my wife has basically been convincing doctors that my 2 children have Asthma.  I do not believe they have asthma.  My kids get a bad cough every year when winter arrives.  As of right now they both have colds.  Or my wife calls it Asthma now!  I myself just came down with a cold too which I know who I got it from.  So I never heard of Asthma being contagious.  My wife got prescription inhalers for them.  They have never had any difficulty breathing.  Early this year I took them to another specialist which I went with.  My wife again gave false statements to the doctor.  I told him the truth.  Even that being said, he said they have Asthma.  Now how on earth can you diagnose a person with Asthma without doing any tests?  I looked over all the paper work from the previous doctor that said my kids have asthma, and not one test was performed but yet they keep handing out prescription inhalers like they are candy to my children!!!  I don't know how to stop them.  I called the 2nd doctor that I went to and asked him why he keeps prescribing medication without even another doctor visit.  He said he has to based on what my wife tells him, or he will be liable if something was to happen.

Early this year I had an argument with my Pediatrician about my wife giving my daughter an inhaler when she can breath fine.  I asked since when do we give inhalers to a child with a cold (Cough).  She said why not let your wife give it to my daughter and see if it helps her with her cough.  I argued that this medicine serves one purpose, and that is to open THE AIRWAYS.  I said how about we don't give her any and see how she does.  Guess what, about 3-4 days after that visit, my daughters COLD went away and she stopped coughing.  I honestly think these doctors get some kind of kickback for prescribing drugs.  If my child does not have asthma, I do not want inhalers prescribed to my kids which could cause long term problems.  They all have side affects.  If you do not need inhalers why take the risk of long term side affects?

THANKS!!

You might want to consider getting counseling help for your wife, make an appointment and take her there, it's wrong to say your children have asthma when they do not and some of the medications used for asthma, as some of the medications have steroids in them, why she'd want to give your children steroids when they don't need them is not good.
Also, make an appointment with a totally different pediatrcian and ask that spirometrey tests be done to check for asthma and get the testing done, for a definitive results. However, this should be done a month after your children have been off asthma medications....
But you need to sit down and talk face to face with your wife while the children are being babysitted and away, so you can ask her why she feels the need to medicate children that are healthy? Sounds like she needs help and you need to give her that help. Seek out counseling....

My son had cough variant asthma (he's since outgrown it - he was diagnosed at 2 and is now 22) in which it only struck primarily in the fall and spring. If he got sick his coughing became worse. He never had any testing by a lung doc...just his pediatrician. But when he got older he had many of the typical breathing tests in which it showed that he had asthma of his small bronchial airways. He was on steroid asthma medications that stunted his growth. If your children do NOT have any issues AFTER a cold, then please have them go in for proper testing. Sometimes a mother knows what is wrong with her children but sometimes it might be too much caring if you know what I mean.

I agree with Sherry, she said it better than me, However, if it is the results of overcaring she still might need counseling help to work through it...but do sit down and talk this over with your wife privately, ask her then...

Perhaps you can do a second medical opinion, with a pulmologist. They are the doctors that specialize in breathing problems, such as asthma and copd. I have asthma myself, and my coughing is very worse when I am under the weather. A lot of children do develop asthma after having the flu, and I have no clue why but it is a well known medical fact. You know when the doctor has you breathe in deep? I have a natural wheeze from my asthma, and it will sound like I'm a very old man whose smoked years on end gasping for air when I'm sick. I am so bad I have to use a nebulizer every 4-6 hours at home. It is just a thought. However, I will tell you I do not show many other signs of asthma unless I am sick or I run. I won't cough much in between. Colds will aggravate asthma, and if the inhaler helps with the cough then frankly they probably have asthma. Like Sherry said, you can have testing done if you feel your wife is over caring. However, sometimes a mother does know when something is wrong and what it is. I knew my kid was autistic before he was diagnosed. Just because it doesn't show, it doesn't mean they have it. However, to be safe, you should have them seen by a pulmologist.

Actually I took my wife to a psychiatrist in 2005, and she refused treatment.  She was also admitted for 5 days in 2010 for some issues.  But always refuses any further treatment.  We went to counseling together about a year ago.  That didn't help either.

My kids do not wheeze at all.  My son gets a cold and it just gets much worse then my daughter.  My wife never puts them to bed early.  I think that is a reason why they get sick worse then me.  This past episode, my son got sick with bad cough, then my daughter, then me.  We all had coughs.  My daughter is now better, very little cough.  They both had running noses etc.  All signs of a cold.  We all had phlegm, my son had more then my daughter and me.   I'm getting better but still cough a little.  But during all this, none of my kids had any problems getting air.  I did the peak flow tests during this time, and results were the same as any other day.  A few days ago I had a call about another prescription for my daughter (VENTOLIN HFA INH).  I see no reason at all for my wife to be giving my daughter this inhaler.  On Saturday she tried giving my daughter an inhaler, I don't know which one is was.  Lucky my daughter told my wife that she is fine!  I told her do not take that stuff unless your having problems breathing.  She has NEVER had problems breathing, but yet my wife insists she needs these inhalers.

I mean if we all get this cough, how could that be asthma?  I for sure do not have asthma.

There are doctors really like that i've experienced that too, they would prescribe expensive medicines which are not really needed. try using the natural remedies first. it could only be a simple cough as i see it. drink lots of water and juices, just use vicks or vaporiser/humidifier if there are flu or sneezes.

Dred I know what your talking about.  My wife is nuts.  My daughters cough almost gone now.  Just coughs a little phlegm up in the morning.  When my wife hears my daughters phlegm she thinks she needs to give my daughter the inhaler!   I told my daughter to just push it away.  She can breath fine.  I know I have never taken any inhalers for a little phlegm....  My wife is totally nuts and trying to do harm to my kids health.  She is not using an inhaler as it is intended for.   I tried to explain to the doctor that my wife makes up symptoms telling them my kids wheeze and have difficulty breathing.  Totally wrong.  I don't understand how doctors can prescribe these inhalers without any tests performed on my kids to point to asthma.... Blows my mind.  I don't know how to stop the prescribing of unnecessary medications.  The doctor told me if my wife calls and asks for these meds, he has to prescribe them.  That is crazy man.

Seek out legal help and try to get your wife admitted to the hospital for an evaluation, but you'll need to seek out an attorney. It's nuts to me and I'm a Mom, I'd never want to treat my child with anything unless it was needed. I also do not understand why a doctor would prescribe a medicine that could do harm if it's not needed and if they've not running any testing, these doctors should've at least done the breathing challenge tests...Tell an auttorney that you suspect your wife has "Munchausen by proxy syndrome" (MBPS) this is a real mental illness and you might want to look for support groups for this to seek out help...

UmDaMan, my daughter has never been tested for asthma and I give her albuterol when she coughs. I have cough variant asthma and so does my daughter. An excellent allergist did allergy testing, found the plants/molds she was allergic to and prescribed albuterol (there was one pulmonary test done, but that's it).

When my daughter starts coughing I can tell it's an asthma cough because it's tight and unproductive. When she uses the inhaler it loosens up and she can clear her chest. I should probably get her a maintenance inhaler (steroids) to help prevent the whole asthma cascade - she's 11.5 now and this is going to be a lifelong thing for her (she will not outgrow it).

Honestly, you sound overly controllling. I don't understand why you are so panicked about this issue. Do the children's coughs improve when they use the inhaler?

kazbern, for one I'm not controlling.  I'm concerned about medicine that is induced to my children when not necessary.  Inhalers serve one purpose,  to open airways.  My children's airways are not being restricted.  They can always breath fine.  An inhaler does and will not stop my children from coughing.  It's not like they have a coughing attack.  It's a cough that any person with a cold gets.  Cough, runny nose etc.  I have never taken in inhaler for a cold.  If they have phlegm that is not coming up then I will give them medicine that is made to loosen phlegm.  Not an Inhaler.  Doctors these days seem to hand out medicine like they are free candy bars.  My parents, brothers and sisters also highly disagree with giving my children these inhalers.

I also have cough variant asthma. I rarely feel out of breath and never wheeze. My oxygen sats can go as low as 92 with me feeling fine, but I do start to have decreased tolerance for heavy exercise and some mental slowness.

I do think testing with a pediatric allergist or pulmonologist is a good idea. You certainly don't want them on medication that isn't needed, but you also don't want them to be oxygen-deprived even though free of classical asthma symptoms.

Oh I also have an oxygen monitor.  Both kids 99-100%.  My kids is actually better then mine.  Mine only 97-99.  It also has the ability to monitor and record data so that you can test yourself during sleep.  Very cool device.  Of coarse if they have asthma then they need medicine to treat it.  But so far I have not seen any tests that say they have asthma.  All just guesses based on what my wife tells the doctors.  If you tell a doctor all the symptoms that you read about online about Asthma........
