Asthma Risk Higher for People with Bowel Disease

People with inflammatory bowel disease are 1.5 times as likely to have asthma as individuals in the general population, a large new study shows.

Do you have Asthma and Bowel Disease?

This was a theory (that I've mentioned here before) that my Allergy Dr. presented to me many years ago. He wrote a paper on it as well. He told me that he felt that most people with the type of symptoms that I presented with allergies, asthma, GERD and even Heart Disease, could all be brought on by allergies. He suggested that irritable bowel syndrome on could also be due to allergic reactions - so it would seem that his theories have become fact.

Hugs, Teri :)

That's pretty interesting Teri. I have been told that I am at risk for asthma too because I have an IBD and also when the seasons change, us IBD'ers sometimes have an increase of flare ups due to our allergies as well. My Uc is in remission but usually in the fall and spring, I pop out of remission and require additional medication to stop my flares.
Thanks for the link smile

I just read your posts. Thats interesting. Could all of this be to a poor immune system? I'm 57. Since the age of 12 I've had
bad allergies (environmental). Got asthma when I was in my
mid 30's and 3 months ago had a total colectomy done (removal of large intestine) due to IBS and colon inertia.

Hi Annie! tongue

I found an article that may help a bit to explain some of this.  It's funny how something as small as a dust particle can set us up for certain things the rest of our lives!

Hugs, Teri tongue

"When the immune system does not function properly, it leaves the body susceptible to an array of diseases. Allergies and hypersensitivity to certain substances are considered immune system disorders. In addition, the immune system plays a role in the rejection process of transplanted organs or tissue."  Check out the rest of the article at...
