So I have been having trouble swallowing for a LONG time now.. I got a new doctor and she says I have fluid build up behind my ears (which makes sense, i have had ear pain, clogged ear feeling, vertigo, etc for ever now!) and post nasal drainage in my throat (I can always feel it like a lump in my throat but never knew what it was.. now it always feels like food gets stuck in my throat!!) So she says it’s due to allergies.. also have inflamed sinuses..? But my question is, has anyone had drainage so bad it feels like food is getting stuck? Or like a lump on your throat? What did you do to clear it up? I’ve been using saline spray, but the Claritin she gave me to take daily I’m afraid to take. (I’m afraid to take any mediation.. afraid of side effects).. if you have taken Claritin .. did it have any negative side effects on you? I’m afraid of worsened anxiety since I do have anxiety and attacks!!

Hi Lacey,

For many years I suffered with food getting stuck in my throat. It was so bad at times that I had to go to the emergency room.

What has helped me is to make sure I drink enough water with my meal and I found in a Sjogrens website that eating bites of meat with mayonnaise, sauces or yogurt helps the food go down. I use an avacado mayonnaise mixed with an herb. The ingredients of the mayo look healthier than other kinds. I use a little dab with each bite of my meat. It really makes a difference for me.

I also have post nasal drip. If I'm exposed to an allergen my throat becomes tighter and I have more drip. I own a particulate matter meter which lets me know when the pollution level is high outdoors. During those times, I don't open the windows.

Good luck to you.

When my sinuses get clogged up, drip, etc, I do sinus wash once or twice a day. Cleaning out the gunk makes a huge difference.

You are probably so far along that you have a plaque built up which can't easily be cured, but you can keep it at a lower level with washes. Bacteria, etc, can't be killed there easily because there is very poor blood circulation in the sinuses, so antibiotics don't get there.

Search the archives with the Google search box for your key words and sinus wash.
