Hello,

I have been to the ER multiple times for allergic reactions that included swelling, hives, and wheezing. They were all treated with steroids and Benadryl successfully, But my most recent attack happened yesterday and it was probably the worst and longest lasting one i had. It was treated with epinephrine, steroids and Benadryl.
I have started to piece together a pattern when I get these reactions. I notice i always had a very stressful event a day or two before i get the reactions.

My question is does anyone else notice they get worsening reactions after stress? Also at the ER when i got the epinephrine injection in my arm, I got really itchy and got a sort of last surge of swelling and itching until the medicine kicked in about 8 minutes later. Has this happened to anyone else that has had epinephrine?

Thank you for reading.

Hi,

From what I understand, stress can makes our allergic reactions worsen. I have an allergy that the docs have not been able to figure out yet, I am treated the same as you and now have an EPI pen.
As I am not a doctor, but I think when you have an allergy to something, the stress can make it worse.

My last trip to the hospital I had the same itchy, hives, swelling, that you had, I am sure that is just part of the allergic reaction as the meds fixed my issues also.

They say we can not be allergic to stress, but we are all different.
May be a great idea to keep a diary of activities and food, etc and see when these reactions occur.
Good Luck

Did your reactions start out of nowhere? Or are they something you've been dealing with for a while? I ask because all of my troubles including the allergic reactions started after a pneumothorax/pneumomediastinum that I got last year.

I also wanted to ask anyone who reads this. Is there a chance that aspirin could cause a delayed allergic reaction? I ask because the only other thing I remember about all my allergic reactions is that I took aspirin containing medicine and my reactions happened later that day that I took it or the very next day.

I do have an appt with an allergist/immunologist, but it's almost two moths away.

I have read that aspirin and other NSAIDS can cause a delayed reaction, but I have no personal experience with that.

Many of us on the allergy forum have had experience with figuring out our reactions. The best way we have found to find out by ourselves has been keeping a "food diary" or "food journal." Not just foods, but what we drink, all medicines, things we might have been exposed to, which can include detergents and latex. There are lots of posts - see the search box at the top of the page.

I keep a small notebook or a calendar that I can write a lot of notes in on my kitchen counter. I make entries of foods, time and reactions with times. This is especially important for those who have delayed reactions because some reactions can be as much as two days to occur.

Hello, Alcie

Thank you for your comment.

I have been keeping track of what I eat and medicines. I have stopped taking aspirin containing medicine, but I have also stopped eating gluten containing foods. I noticed that when I sweat now my head does not burn like it used to! I am sure the gluten had something to do with it, but I also believe that the aspirin made the reaction worse.

I did manage to get my appointment with the allergist moved to this Friday so I will probably get answers then.

I had a really bad reaction to too much allergic liquids put in my dosage at an allergist office in Texas. I was shaking and felt my neck closing. We moved back up north and I had a very good allergist in NYC.

Yes, it is possible that you had an allergic reaction to aspirin.

Thank you all for your posts. I have not had any allergic reaction symptoms since I stopped taking aspirin containing products. I still occasionally get small numbers of hives on my arms/hands and chest, but nowhere near as bad as they were after taking something like alka seltzer, or Advil. I am doing much better.

I also had a test done to see what I might be reacting to and dogs/cats, a type of grass as well as dust mites were very high chance of being allergic to. I have two long haired dogs that never gave me issues, but a short hair doberman does get me itchy. I also use a dehumidifier for the dust mites. Anyway, I hope someone who reads this gets something out of it.

Wanted you to know that advil probably has some aspirin in it. Alka seltzer is buffered aspirin. Why don't you call a pharmacist to find alternative. Tylenol is an alternative but you must be careful not to use too much. Maybe rolaids liquid has no aspirin. Pharmacist know a lot about this.

Have happened to me couple of times but never knew about anxiety and its perils those days.

Kept wondering whats causing all the worst hives and and all things you mention.
Delayed and all kind.

Food allergies can cause stuff too.
