I've been sick with what seems like a sinus infection for the past 3 weeks. I've had nasal congestion, feeling of fullness in ears, wet cough, constantly blowing my nose and just feeling tired in general. about a week ago (2 weeks into being sick) I stopped being able to smell or taste anything. This is very scary to me, since it's never happened before.

Has anyone else ever had something like this last this long? I can't take Mucinex or really any cold medicines because they cause my heart arrhythmia to act up, but I have been using my Neti Pot daily. I just felt it was really strange to develop a loss of smell and taste 2 weeks into an illness. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Hello & welcome to Healing Well. Sorry to read about what you are dealing with. I have this happen at least once a year with a nasty sinus infection. It sounds like it is time for you to go see your dr & get whatever appropriate medicine the dr thinks you need. When I get this bad he will also give me a shot of a steroid which helps too. I call it the balloon head when I get like this.

Take care.

Hi DisneyLove, sorry to hear you are not feeling well. Last Summer I got a terrible sinus infection and went on an antibiotic. I was really sick for three weeks and I rarely get sick. I could not taste or smell while I had the sinus infection but after I got better I still could not and unfortunately it did not come back. I can smell or taste a little bit but really not much. I have seen an ENT and the regular round of Drs for this. They say the smell is likely the problem affecting the taste, for whatever that is worth. I have no congestion and do not even have allergies. I do have Psoriatic Arthritis and some other rheum. conditions but nobody has really given me any insight. If I can help please let me know. It is really rough, I know.

I have what I believe is chronic sinusitis. I get a sinus infection almost once a month. Same story every time and yes, almost every time I lose my sense of taste and smell for a bit.

It usually ends up moving into my chest and causing me to cough for a week or two. A week or so after I start feeling normal again- BAM, another sinus infection.

Sinusitis is no fun! Sorry you have that so often. I expect to lose taste/smell with a sinus infection this was for no obvious reason. Oddly enough my 4 level lumbar decompression in March seems to have opened things up and I have a reasonable amount of smell and taste now. It came back right after the surgery. My surgeon was surprised and not sure it was due to the surgery but said it might have been a spinal fluid issue. Who knows but I am glad. Take care.
