Is diatomaceous earth safe for skin contact?

Hi. I recently learned about bath mats that contain diatomaceous earth. Is diatomaceous earth safe for skin contact? I'm guessing yes since they sell them but since it's used to kill bugs I worry if it should be exposed to skin.

Not a problem with skin, but you don't want to inhale it. I'd shake it outside while wearing a mask and then wash it and rinse twice.
