Hello!  I usually post at the Crohn's board, but I have a 4 year old daughter who has had eczema since she was a few months old.  The eczema seems to be coming from Food allergies - I have severe food allergies/intolerances also.

The ped. is sending her to an allergist/immunologist, I am being told by them that this will be a 3 hour visit for the 1st visit.  That if they order tests they will do it then.

Hopefully someone here can shed some light on what to expect and how to handle a 4 yo having skin tests.  Maybe share some of your own experiences or your childrens.

Thanks in advance.

Are they doing the scratch test? If so, they usually mark small circles on the back and scrape the skin to insert the allergen within those circles. If your daughter has an allergic reaction, it will swell a bit. Nothing to be alarmed about, it sort of looks like misquito bites. A 4 year old is going to be tough because even though these tests normally don't hurt much, kids like to wiggle! I don't have much advice on how to entertain your girl while she is going thru this. My son had allergy testing when he was 18 months old but they did the needle under the skin test (I can't remember the name of this test). All I can say is that he did not like this at all!
Good luck and I hope she doesn't have tooooo many allergies. That makes it rough on a kid.

I don't really know what kind of tests, they didn't really tell me what they would do.  I was under the impression that they don't know until they see the child and what he/she has, then they determine what they do.

Thanks for the information!!

Some doctors are like that. They will look at the child and then set the course of action. And sometimes you get the doctors that plunge right in. It all depends on the doctor. But I would think that if the first visit is going to be 3 hours they would do something.
