Hi everyone! I do not have asthma but my 8 year old son does. I have been wondering about this for a long time and seems like I found a good place for input tongue   My son was dx'd at the age of 4 after being hospitalized with pneumonia. The question i have is this...When my son runs and plays his peak flow meter readings improve, and never go down. The summertime is his absolute best time of year, and never needs his rescue meds during this time. For him its the start of the fall and winter that really gets him as his asthma is triggered by viruses onlys...for this reason I dread the start of school and prepare for the long winter sad   He gets everything going around and its so difficult to exp[lain to him that because of his asthma he has to be extra careful. Doies that sound familiar to any of you? Every doc he has seen is amazed that he doesnt have trouble in the summer with the pollens and everything. And most are confused that the higher his activity level the better he breaths confused . I sometimes wonder if he really is asthmatic...They say he is a mild asthmatic and considered persistant moderate in the cold "virus" months. He has not taken any rescue meds since April and only when he gets the latest virus to go around. I know I sound niave but this is confusing to me...The neighbor kid is also asthmatic and has trouble with sports and coughs quite a lot,but doesnt ever miss a day of school in the winter from illnesses (of course his mom wouldnt know when he needed his meds or not) mad Anyway I was just hoping to hear everyone elses experience with asthma and learn if this sounds familiar to anyone confused

Hugs

Shelly

Hi Shelly, my son (who's 14) started with seasonal asthma when he was 4. And there are a few years he showed absolutely no symptoms whatsoever but he IS more prone to throat/URI's like your son. My son doesn't understand either (about the whole cleanliness factor thing) and he's older then yours! Maybe it's a guy thing?? I can't comment on the exercise thing because when my son runs in gym at school or with his friends, he starts coughing like crazy and has to use his inhaler. Is your son on an allergy meds in the fall and winter? Has your son been tested for allergies such as mold and mildew (which are high in the fall)?
