Can you help me with the definition of shortness of breath?

Hello,

I'm usually on the Lyme forum but I am wondering if you can help.  I'm trying to decide whether or not I have "shortness of breath."  I do not gasp for air, or feel like I absolutely can't breathe except during the occasional coughing fit.  But many times I feel like my breath is really shallow, even though I am wanting to breathe more deeply - and often this gives me a weird feeling in my throat.  Also, sometimes I find myself holding my breath for no reason.

In your experience, have you seen this included under the umbrella of "shortness of breath?"

Hi Alexia, welcome to the Asthma/allergy side of HW :) I get the same thing that you are experiencing and I was wondering the same thing myself. Mine normally strikes in the evenings and when I take my allergy pills such as Allegra or Singulair it makes me breathe better. But I have noticed that when I just take Singulair for my allergies and not my Allegra, I tend to breathe easier. It's something to bring up to the doc. I don't have asthma (that I know of) but I do have severe allergies.

You might want to talk this over with your pcp (primary care physician) and maybe get him to set up a lung function test. How often do you feel you're short of breath and are there any specific times? You might want to jot down on paper your next shortness of breath and take it with you to the doctor!!!
Otherwise you might always be wondering. For your sake I really and truly hope it's not asthma.
I would not wish what I'm going through right now on anyone. I've had asthma all my life.

Thanks, Chartreux.  I will ask the doctor about that.  I do have the shallow breathing a lot.  I hope that it is due to the Lyme and that it will resolve itself.  I hope you are feeling better and able to keep things under control!
