I've been asthmatic all my life and am classed as Type 1 Brittle Asthma, though I think it is called refractory asthma in the US.  This year has been particularly bad with hospital admissions and rescue therapy.  My IgE levels are high and specifically with reference to mixed grasses, housedust, cats and dogs.  There is a drug called Xolair that my consultant would like to use, however it has not been recommended by the Scottish Medicines Committee due to cost, so she won't prescribe it.  Has anyone had good experiences with this medication?  I can't afford to cover the cost myself, (£256 per dose) but I am hoping to persuade her to make a clinical case for me.

Thanks for any comments.

Hello Lyonheart:
Nice to meet you!
So sorry your having a hard time with the asthma. Keep on top of the doctors about the Xolair it could help you. i don't use Xolair but from what I read it might help you. I've had asthma all my life too so your not alone there. I've had about 5 asthma flairs this year with one time at the Emergency room. I had an Asthmatic Attack to the Medrol Dose Pack. I'm okay with prednisone but any other type of steroids triggers an asthma flair. They can't test anyone for steroid allergies. like you I'm allergic to Dust and Dogs and now also plant molds and I really like plants.
I use the following meds and they help me:
Asmanex
Singulair
Clarinex
A saline nasal spray
Xopenex as needed this is better than albuterol
Zantac - stomach med
I cannot use the advair disk as it makes me cough so I can't recommend it and I did use it correctly. might be another med allergy for me.
Good luck to you and you have my prayers too

oops sorry I also use Astelin
