hello everyone.  I am usually in a different forum on this site.  However I do also suffer from asthma and allergies.  I get allergy shots weekly for about 7 months now.  I was wondering if it is normal to have my sinus allergies act up the night of my shots, I do know it is normal for my asthma to flare up a little bit.  The next question is about oral allergy syndrome.  I was wondering why you can gain more and more as time goes on.

Prior to the scratch testing they ent did a full bloodwork series for allergies.  The ones that showed up were dogs, cats, oak trees and to my surprise peanuts.  I have Crohn's disease and peanut butter use to be how I got my protein while having a flare up of it.  What was strange was before I had the results a co worker of mine was spreading PB on a bagel and I was feeling itchy.  I thought it was just my regular allergies (since I am a Vet assistant and highly allergic to cats and dogs).  My oral allergy syndrome foods for now that I have problems with are: apples, peaches, plums, nectarines, cherries, strawberries, kiwi, cantelope, peas, carrots, celery, string beans, cashews, and pistachios.  I am very suprised some of these foods didnt appear as true allergies since my throat swells , i get hives, and an itchy tongue and gums to some of the foods listed above.  Is there anything I can take to help me so I am able to eat some of these foods raw?  I have noticed some I cannot even have if they are cooked or they have to be cooked to a mush that a baby would be able to eat.  I miss summer days having all that fresh fruit but I dont dare (I have an epi pen but prefer to avoid having to use it at all costs)

Unfortantly there is nothing we can do about the severe allergies :( ... only STRICT avoidence. Although I have heard that if your allergy shots work, then you will be able to eat the fruits and veggies again... but if you are anaphylactic, perhaps they are not only OAS, but a true food allergy... I wouldn't even bother trying to eat them!!!   Also do not only rely on the tests. There can be false positives as well as false negatives. I have had the skin test done, which showed EXTREME reaction, and I have also had the RAST blood test, which showed negatives.. BUT.. my reactions to poultry, fish and tree nuts are anaphylactic, I have used many EpiPens, and went into cardiac and respiratory arrest a couple times due to the anaphylaxis... so you can't always rely on the test.

Let the nurses/doctors know about your asthma flairs and now the sinuses acting up. I do hope the shots do work wonders for you, so that you would be able to bring more foods back into your diet.

One more thing, NEVER hesitate to use your EpiPen, it's a lifesaver, and ALWAYS go to the hospital after using it. (Some people think that if you use your epipen you don't have to go to the hospital, this is wrong!!!! You need to go!)

All the luck!

I have never had allergy shots. I have allergies to mold and latex. They are pretty much mild. I don't know much about allergy shots. Best of luck to you. Happy 2007. Brandi.
