i was never officially diagnosed with asthma 3 years ago i woke up and was having problems breathing..went to the dr he gave me albuterol inhaler used it for 3 years i had to use it everyday several times a day for 3 years then i was no longer under insurance and i still had my albuterol but it started affecting me very negativly causing upset stomach, tightness in the chest, extreme anxiety while this happened i took xanax to combat the anxiety and then felt worse on that after about 5 days...im almost positive my breathing problems are due to allergies.i bought an air purifier really hasnt made a huge difference..so as i stand right now i really prefer not using any medicines do to recent events im scared to use anything..i have xopenex inhaler now i was giving azmacort steroid and singulair but to scared to use any of these things due to side effects i might encounter.so im looking for alternative treatments to prevent breathing problems vitamins herbs and other products thanks alot

PLEASE, PLEASE be wary of any herbal meds! Hergal meds are not FDA approved and you can do yourself harm if you don't tx your asthma according to your MD's advice. The corticosteroids your MD prescribes are not the type you hear about over the news. They are a very low dose, only goes straight to the lungs and does not affect other body parts. One thing you need to remember is to rinse your mouth as corticosteroids will cause thrush. If your air purifier is not made for the entire house, it just doesn't work to the degree you need. Invest in a HEPA filter for your heating & a/c system. Change from curtains to blinds, rid your house of excess throw pillows, change to hardwood flooring if possible, don't use a fireplace or eat foods cooked over charcoal (some fast food restaurants use charbroiled cooking), place mattress protectors on your beds along w/pillow protectors also. These are just a few of the things which will make your life better. I don't log onto the computer on a daily basis, but just leave a question for me and I'll answer it at least on a weekly basis. There is so much you can do to help make your life better. Contact the American Lung Association and ask them to send you various literature. They supply me with pamphlets & booklets which I use in the patient education. Good luck!
