I have severe allergies to pollens/grasses/molds, ect.  I have always been terrified of bees especially yellow jackets - they seem to chase me around all the time.  Last year, I was stung for the first time in my life, and had no allergic reaction, other than some normal swelling and itching.

My question is, can you "become" allergic to bees even if you have been stung before and had no reaction in the past?

Any info is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Dear Loveangel, nice to meet you. A simple answer to your question would be "yes". Please don't get alarmed though. Once your allergic to something your always allergic unless you can have allergy shots. But an allergy can come about at anytime to anything, but its not something to put your life on worry about. So have fun when you can.

Hope that help. Hugz.

I'm allergic to wasp but I still go outdoors and try not to let them get me scared........ smurf

Thank you Chartreux!

I think I have bee phobia. I would stay indoors this time of year because they are so nasty right now!  People think it is funny watching me run from these tiny terrorists! But they love me (maybe my perfume or hair products or my kids with all the sugar and treats they have all the time...). My son is playing football, and I LOVE to go watch him, but at this time of year with the bees about to die off - they are out of control! My hubby can swat at them and kill them on the spot for me, but there are too many.  I knew someone once who was allergic and he had to have this little kit b/c he was always getting stung (they tortured him too). I also know someone who died from a bee sting.

Last yr when I got stung (at son's football game) I went into a panic, and everyone laughed at me. I was waiting to have the allergic reaction, and I didn't.  Now I'm afraid that I will just develop an allergy since I'm alergic to just about everything else! (even cockroaches, according to the testing I had done).  I found this board b/c I visit the FMS and anxiety board.  My allergies are severe but they are not the worst of my problems.

Anyway, can you suggest anything I can do to keep these critters away from me other than wearing dark colors and no perfumes (which is hard for me - I usually am all lathered up in lotions, and perfumes, and body sprays, ect.)

Also, thank you for the warm welcome!

I agree with SnowyLynne, don't wear the perfumes or hairspray as they can attract the bees to you, try a little insect repellent like off, Avon makes something called skin so soft it might help. I used to run like crazy from wasp but that makes them come after me all the more. The biggest thing with bees is not moving if it lands on you but thats really hard for us, So I can relate, (I'm allergic to wasp).
Hope this helps. I might see you over in the fibro room I'm newly dx'd with that...........
Take Care and soft hugz smurf

Oh now! I've thankfully not had the chance to discover if I'm allergic to these mean buzzy things (and hope I never have to!) but I do know first hand that you can become allergic to anything at any time. Two years ago I had to take a course of antibiotics for a jaw infection. Same kind I have taken all my life. No problem. The following month I needed a repeat dose ... one spoonfull and 10 minutes later I was being whizzed off to hospital. Just goes to show how quickly our bodies can change. As I am still discovering every other day! It really is scary when you allow yourself to think about it but you can't live your life worrying about what may or may not be in that respect else we'd never get up, eat, drink, take our meds, go out, wear anything, touch anything ...
