Hi there, I have a fear of the dentist. More recently I have developed anxiety and panic attacks well in advance (a few days) prior to treatment. My question is; should I take Diazepam for 24 hours prior to treatment?
The dental surgeon has already prescribed it to try for my next visit.
I have never taken any medication like diazepam before and was wondering if there might be an alternative I could try. Although I was so bad before my last visit and during the treatment, I would be prepared to take the diazepam as long as it helps.
I have to go back in a week for a large filling (close to the root) and I am already worrying about it. I never used to be this bad.
Any suggestions would be appreciated, Thanks in advance!

I would say ABSOLUTLY take it if you are going to get yourself to panic level over this. Remember that you need not suffer... these meds are made to help people like you with this type of situational anxiety. Please don't hesitate, know that your Doc. wouldn't have prescribed it unless he felt that it would be beneficial. Keep in mind however that anytime you are concerned about taking a med. call the Doc. and run your concerns past him/her. That's what they are there for :)

Good luck!!

Good Morning,
It feels to me like your oral surgeon has chosen a good medication pre-dental procedure.  I would not worry about taking it as you say if it helps.  It is prescribed for anxiety and is one of many in  the Benzodiazepine class.

I agree, by all means take it as prescribed so that it will help you through these procedures.  If it helps, then it's a great thing to do to get yourself to a tolerable level.  Please let us know how you do with this.

Sorry it has taken me so long to reply. I did take the diazepam before the treatment and it really helped me.

I certainly didn't have a panick attack. I was quite anxious, but nothing like the time before.

Thankyou for all the replies, they also helped me too.

Last time I saw the dentist I was already on regular valium which helped. I'm glad your visit went ok.

Valium is used very much here for dental work or prior to dental work
You take care and so glad that you were okay during this procedure

I am glad the Valium worked for you as well. I always have the nitrous oxide, I know just like the little kids but hey we do what we have to when anxious.  My dentist always laughs and says we will give the the two martini dose.  Strawberry flavored.
