As Coltsfan has suggested - getting a second opinion is a great idea - IMHO health professionals are sometimes too quick to pass off symptoms as being 'stress'.
A couple of questions spring to mind - Did the doctor prescribe any meds to help you thru this rough patch? And did they do any tests eg. blood tests, EKG etc? Finding out that these things are ok can go a long way towards setting our minds at ease and helping us along the road to felling better.
The symptoms you describe - I can relate to all of them as being part of anxiety
- I have found counselling to be of great help to me when I am going thru a bad patch as you describe - helped me develop new skills for coping
I wish you well - keep us posted as to your progress.
