Over the past few days I've been having anxiety when it comes to eating. I get this fear that I'll choke. I don't know why all of a sudden its bothering me. It ruins my whole day.. I dread each meal. I try to tell my self its crazy talk, but I find my self drinking water with every bite. I've told my boyfriend...he says I think too much. Tomorrow I'm going out of town and I know I'll be at a resturant eating in front of people which makes my phobia worse. I've had this problem before but its gone away quick. Its all I think about I crazy or is someone else suffering from this problem?

Good Morning

In all probability you are suffering from a severe anxiety disorder with a good dose of health anxiety/phobia. Please remember, I am only guessing and cannot say this with any real certainty. I am not a profesional.

Have you seen your physician to rule out any physical problem?

I think you would do well looking into therapy. We do have a thread on phobias , I have brought it up to the top for you.

Keep talking to us.......we are here to support and help  you.

We've had others mention a phobia with swallowing or a loved one with this problem. It usually was from a choking episode that scared them so much, they had a phobia of it after. Is your swallowing phobia out of the blue? Or have you had a scary choking episode?

I agree with Kitt. You need therapy. The positive self talk you've been using will help. Relax while eating. Keep chewing your food and don't worry about swallowing. The food will go down eventually. This is what I've read to do in an anxiety book. Also, in the book it mentioned difficulty in swallowing as a symptom of anxiety. Difficulty as in scared to do it.

Let us know what you find that helps!

Hi!  I definitely have a "swallowing issue".   Mine is not exactly the same in that it's not when I am eating and feel as if I will choke...but when I have panic or bad anxiety, I feel like I cannot swallow - it is very scary & bizarre.  Like my throat is closing up and I can't swallow.  Is that similar?  If so, mine is panic/anxiety related for sure.
Therapy is a must and the best first step, in my opinion.  My panic disorder is pretty severe and has been around since childhood so I have to do it all (therapy, distraction/breathing techniques, medications, etc.), but therapy is a good & healthy start.
Good luck!
