Hello, All
I stumbled across the site and have found the post very informative. I had my first full blown panick attack last August 08. I literally thought I was having a heart attack. I tried to get better on my own and was making progress before a death of a friend and finally sought CBT. It helped but just in the last couple weeks the anxiety return and I finally sought medicine to help. 10 mg of Paxil and .5mg klonopin as needed. I find the paxil makes me so sleepy the next day. I take it around 10pm. Should I be taking it earlier. Secondly my therapist who is not an MD warned me against taking klonopin because she feels it is a crutch and not the best way to deal with anxiety. Now I don"t know when it is appropriate to take the klonopin or when I should just tough it out.

Hello and welcome to HealingWell.  I am so glad you found us.
You may try taking your Paxil earlier in the evening so by morning the following day it has worn off a bit more.
There is much controversy re the use of the benzos and I think it comes down to each individual case.  I use Valium when necessary and always make sure I take it with me as it may be my rescue medication if I get into serious problems.
My phychiastrist is not crazy about it but she lets me have some control over my own situation and I do not abuse the medication. I use it when I need it without any guilt.  It helps me as did therapy and self imaging and staying in the moment when I start to overthink a situation and start with the what if's?
Take care

I used to take Ativan as needed but now take .5 mg twice a day. I think your psychologist was giving her opinion. Some people think meds are a crutch for anxiety/panic attacks. Like Kitt said, I believe it's an individual choice on what road you want to take in living with these attacks. I know I need medication, so I take it daily. I will soon have to wean myself off of the Ativan but I know how to do that.

If you haven't been taking the Paxil a long time, then the sleepiness might just be a side effect that will go away. I'm not a professional, that's my guess. Take care!

Welcome, trdiopn!

I take Paxil 37.5 mg each night at bedtime. I don't recall it making me sleepy in the beginning, but if it did, that and most otherside effects have long since worn off for me. It's a good idea to keep your doctor well up-to-date about how you're responding to your medications, both in terms of whether the meds are "working" and whether you've got any side effects or issues adjusting.

I agree with Kitt and Aries that the choice about anti-anxiety meds is a personal one. Some people respond well to them, some don't, and everyone's side effects or long-term effects are different.

I hope you are able to make a good decision for yourself; you've certainly got a strong record of it so far!

Thanks, Guys for your feed back. I call my doctor and I will start taking them earlier to see how that works.
