Every morning I wake up with a sense of dread, then I start where my throat closes like a mini gag, sometimes they wake me up in my sleep. I have a fear of swallowing particularly liquids but its started with food now. I started with anxiety 2 days before my period, been like this 3 weeks now. Had derealization but I put that down to the amitriptyline which my hubby poured down the sink... brain cosh!

I really have to concentrate on not mini gagging when I eat or drink, they are like little jerks in my throat, I dont get the anxiety anymore but the obsessive thoughts about been inadequate in eating and drinking is taking over every waking thought. Im seeing a CBT councellor in a couple of days, ive even thought about seeing a hynotherapists, its driving me potty!

Anyone else experienced this jerky things in the throat? BTW Ive got no globus but I do feel like my muscles are like a tight band round my throat.

Relaxing...tried it..failed lol. Oh and ive had all the barium tests etc etc...clear....

I don't have quite the same symptoms, but had what I call "choking awake" during the night a lot. I wasn't choking *on* anything, just felt like my throat stuck together or closed up for a few seconds. That all turned out to be caused by reflux, which I didn't suspect since I'd never had heartburn. You might want to ask your doctor or an ENT specialist about your throat symptoms.

Of course, once those things happen, the anxiety roars in! Not breathing right is a sure-fire trigger for my anxiety.

Ok as strange as this one is I get it and others I know have it too! I ha a phase when all I eat is soft food. Since I was a kid I hated chewing...tooo much work then all of a sudden I got this fear of choking and had a hard time eating. I am much better but still go through phases that I just fear choking on food and have a hard time swallowing food. I have no solution...sorry but wanted you to know you are not alone! Like for me it just may be a phase and pass.

You mentioned that you don't have anxiety anymore, but you do. The tightness in the throat is a symptom of anxiety. Allow the tightness/gagging to happen. Don't add anymore fear to it. Just accept it as best as you can. Eventually, you will not have this symptom any longer.

You need to do some relaxation techniques when you DON'T have the tightness and gagging. It will help keep the feelings controllable. Good luck!

I woke up this morning, very lethargic, faint, sick, I must be dehydrated, im trying to drink even though my throat sometimes closes! This heat isnt helping!

Sorry your suffering percycat, that choking awake is horrid, isnt that sleep apnea?

I dont think anything is wrong with my throat to go for an ENT, ive had all the tests which were clear, this came on after taking amitriptyline. I think these throat glitches are a stupid habit ive got myself into but hard to get out of.

Bojalaisgirl thanks for that and sorry youve suffered, I didnt have a problem with solid food, but it progressed into an obsession.

Thanks Aries8 I am trying not to add fear to it, its very hard. Maybe this tightness is the last remaining remnant of my anxiety.

Last night, I WAS thinking about the reflex and was troubled with it going to sleep, but I tried my best not to get into the same cycle this morning.

Thanks folks!
