My doctor suggested I take magnesium supplements to help the anxiety. I did tons of research on it and it all looked perfect. Now I seem to be much worse. I am jittering and having more weird symptoms with increased anxiety.
I have tried so much - seem like the more I try to help myself the worse things get !!
Has anyone else gotten worse on magnesium

Hi James,

Sorry to hear you are feeling worse. I have never heard of the magnesium as an anxiety reducer. I take vitamin B5 and find that helps mildly. I'm sorry I don't have any good info but I find everything in moderation best. Take care and maybe stop the magnesium until you can speak to another doctor.

All good thoughts to you :-)

Hey James,

I'm on traditional (western) meds now, but when my anxiety started I tried taking an all-natural approach. I saw a holistic doctor and she prescribed Magnesium and Serenagen (a mix of herbs). One of my symptoms was a racing or pounding heart when feeling anxious and/or having a panic attack.

Like you said I read a lot of positive stuff on Magnesium and was hopeful. But it had the opposite effect on me. It made my heart start to race. I kept taking the herbs which helped to calm me down somewhat (not significantly) and cut down the Magnesium dosage. I had bloodwork done and my Magnesium levels were fine so maybe it was like an overdose to my system. I took it upon myself to cut back the dosage. When I cut it in half I still felt more anxious after taking the Magnesium, but not as much. After noticing that I decided to stop taking it and move on. It often takes time to find out what will work best for your system. We're all individuals.

Many people report that meditation or prayer is a balm for anxiety and depression. Simply sitting in silence and focusing on healthy belly breathing for 10 minutes can give the body and brain a message of calmness and relaxation. Try inhaling for a slow count of five and exhaling for a slow count of seven. Make sure that your breath makes your belly rise, not just your upper chest. Focus on a higher power or a peaceful word and dismiss any intrusive thoughts. Meditate daily for the best results.

I just came across this posting while trying to find info on Magnesium. My anxiety used to be terrible...I found that a technique called Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) helped me tremendously. I still use it occasionally when my anxiety creeps in- usually if I have had a few glasses of wine and am trying to go to sleep. It feels really silly at first, but as you do it and breathe very deeply at the same time, you will notice yourself calming down. You can repeat it as often as you need to reach a normal heart rate. Google it or look on You Tube for some example videos of how to practice it. I have tried practically everything under the sun for my anxiety, Western and Alternative. This seriously works if you stick with it. It helps to break the escalation of your anxiety. Good luck!

hi, was just wondering what types of magnesium supplement you were taking? e.g. magnesium oxide, chloride, sulphate, malate, stearate, orotate, aspartate, citrate, carbonate etc?

I have the same issue with Magnesium supplements. I googled and only found this and another forum where someone was making the same statement. I was wondering. . . Do you have a peanut or legume allergy?

I'm sorry that the magnesium supplements didn't help you. They were of a tremendous help to me and have helped me to get my anxiety under control. How long did you try them? Maybe your body just needed time to adjust?

This is an old thread. I am going to lock it as there hasn't been any activity on it in quite some time.

I encourage you to start a new thread with your questions, because your experience with magnesium is something many of us are eager to hear about!

Thank you for understanding.
