First of all 3 years from now you will 3 years older and wiser. You did not say how old you are now however try not to over think the time frame.
It doesn’t hurt to start planning early, it might just save time later. Getting an idea of what flowers and colors you want could help, and save money maybe, because you have time to wait until things go on sale. (For favors, etc.) Booking a location etc really depends on how far in the future the location is booking. You could call and ask how far ahead they book. I know that the place I had my wedding at is booking for a year/year and a half in the future. Of course, you might want to let family know as soon as you have definitely decided a date. (especially family who might need to save for the expensive plane tickets and hotel)
All my children married within a year of their engagement and I have seen alot of family members wait for a 1 and 1/2 half years before the wedding.
With each of my children I found as Mother of the bride or groom I loved to buy the bridal magazines just for fun remembering that the actual planning of the wedding was my childresn preferences.
Also depending on who is paying for the wedding will make some compromises in your budget.
For now just have fun and try not to doubt yourself. Just let it all happen and you will be fine.
