This is what happened...

3 days ago I had chest discomfort in the middle and left of my chest. I panicked, and went to the hospital thinking for sure I must be having a heart attack. They did an ecg which appeared 'normal' and immediately ruled out heart problems. I was burping the whole time and could feel 'gas' moving around my upper stomach, chest and back area. They gave me meds for 'gas', which I told them I have been taking for quite some time but did not work. The doctor then said, ok, I will give u some omeprazole, it is better - and I told him I HAVE been taking omeprazole too, and it didn't work. After a mild 'quarrel' with the doctor, I managed to get an endoscopy done the next day. The results? Nothing significant. Everything was normal. I do not have GERD or Gastritis or Ulcers. Basically everything looked fine.

But I am still in pain. My chest hurts, and I keep burping. I eat on time and avoid trigger foods (for me it seems to be potatoes, milk and soy). For the past few months I have tried all sorts of natural home remedies - none of which seemed to work beyond the first hour. I don't get enough sleep at night because I raise my pillows and it's really uncomfortable, but I find that when I lay down flat the pain is worse.

The doctor said 'nothing is wrong with you' but I am still in pain & worried they might miss something out.

I don't know what else to do. I've spent so much on doctors and trying to find a cure but I really am at my wits end right now. I keep thinking that I am dying because when my dad had his massive heart attack that killed him, he was burping the whole time too. Yet, they say my heart is fine, it's not GERD, so WHAT on earth could this be? My BMs are fine, but I am losing appetite because of the STRESS!

As I am writing this, I can feel gas movements in my upper abdomen. I was so desperate that I grabbed my son's Gripe Water and chugged down a few spoonfuls. Well of course that didn't work either. The pain comes and goes, it's not constant, but the gassy movements are.

What is wrong with me? :(

Hi Pinks. You have to choose to believe in what the doctors have told you. Your tests came out fine. Do you have printouts of your test results? Can you post them somewhere where you can see them when you need reassurance (refrigerator/bathroom mirror?)

Gas pressure can be incredibly painful, and trigger anxiety. I have had the same fear. However, after clean check-ups, an EKG and the fact that I'm still here... these all assure me that it is nothing to worry about.

I have read that anxious people gulp air as a result of over-breathing. (this then causes the air to collect as gas in the stomach)  It is probable that this is happening to you. If I find a link to that article, I will try and post it later. Reading that this is a documented, fairly common thing with us A/Pers may help you:)

Try not to worry, we are here for you anytime.
