I have had these feelings also. I can be sitting doing work at my desk and then suddenly out of nowhere feel like I am going to pass out , or fall out, or something. Feels like everything in my body just went haywire. It is a very strong feeling. I have thought I was checking out for good. I have had anxiety issues which started about 10 years ago. I have refused to take any medication because I don't want any mind altering substances in my body. I don't know how to get rid of this. Very disturbing to me. I have kids, my youngest just turned 10 and he is a daddy's boy. What can I do ?

Hi D and welcome!

I am sorry that you have experienced this scary symptom. It is one of the worst in my opinion...as I hate the feeling of being out of control. It must be a common one however, judging from the length of this thread!

Medication is only one option to treating anxiety issues. There are many forms of therapy available to give one the tools to deal with the root problems and the resulting anxiety symptoms.

I recovered from daily panic attacks that were rooted in health anxiety and control issues by attending CBT sessions and doing the work that helped me to address and manage my anxiety.

There is also self-help that can be very effective. We have a Resource Guide right here on our main page (1st post) that is full of great stuff. I just updated it today in fact...so I would love for members to check it out.:)

Keep posting with us as well. It is really helpful to talk with others who care and understand what you are going through. We are here to listen and support!

Please consider starting a new thread (as this one is getting long) and more people can recognize you as a new member and welcome you.:)

Talk to you soon,

Hi,
I'm new to this but found it through googling dizzy spells & anxiety. I read a thread from Serb -

"I sometimes get a split second feeling of dizzyness, feel slightly faint, and it comes with what feels like a head or adrenaline rush. It lasts seconds, can sometimes feel like I'm falling depending on what I'm doing"

This is exactly what I get...I don't even know where to start with explaining...I was diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder when I was 24, I'm now 39. It started when I was pregnant with my son (now 15) I just started to feel really worried just before I had him, & for some reason I thought I had Aids, then it went on to fearing I had MS, Parkinson's, Mad Cows Disease only to name a few. I never actually got off the worry ladder, I seemed to go from one disease to another. After all that fear of a dreaded disease I collapsed with a pulmonary embolism in 1999, caused by a pregnancy although my father has had P.E and my mother thinks she was treated for a DVT as well as my sister. It didn't really cause me too much stress considering the health anxiety I had previous to that...all was forgotten about after 6 months of treatment for the clot although I would be lying if I said I was free from any health anxiety as I worry about just about everything. for quite a few years I managed it quite well or during the time I went to college having left school with no qualifications whatsoever, then went on to uni. At the end of stage 2 of my degree I collapsed again with another Pulmonary Embolism. This time is has caused such bad anxiety as the Dr's/hematologist couldn't find a cause for it at all only that they said having one before and a parent having one had pre-dis-positioned me to having another. I've struggled immensely to accept this and have been searching the web (yes its a really bad move as all of us can fit any symptom at any one time).

Sorry for going on but not sure how to explain it only that it's taken over my life. Its gone from brain tumor to MS to cancers and so-forth only to keep doing full circle. I feel like I want more tests but I know it will be the "what if they've missed something" I keep thinking that whatever caused my second clot may just not have shown up on the tests they did...I know I have panic attacks but not ones where I need to get up and leave the room as I used to do, they are so silent that I can have one whilst watching tv but it freaks me out as all sorts run through my head, mainly "oh my god, this is it, its happening" I did wear a monitor to check my heart for a few days but that was all normal although I had several ECG's when I was in hospital, chest x-rays, nuclear medicine blaa blaa blaa...

I'm going back for more CBT but I really have had enough of my thought processes now...even if there was something wrong with me, thinking the way I do isn't any good for me...

If there is anyone that can relate to this it would be so much appreciated.

P.s. My anxiety has never stopped me from working, its something that comes everywhere with me. Where I go it goes...

Thanks xx

Hello Juls,

Welcome! Feeling dizzy is common and may be caused by so many problems, both medical and mental health issues. Medications also are frequently the culprit in causing dizziness.

I think we all have times in our life when we worry we may have a serious Health problems and we convince ourselves that life is going to change drastically. I have called my Dr when I woke one morning with severe vertigo. I had lowered myself to the floor thinking I must be having a heart attack. I called my Dr. Who suggested I most likely had a middle ear problem, try some antivert and if I felt better just come in to work and one of the ER physicians would check out my ears.

She was right and once I had talked with her my anxiety decreased,
And the rest of my day went well.

I am glad to read your going to restart working on your CBT lessons!

Again welcome aboard.

I have been having these very scary symptoms for about six months. The dizzyness and head rush is sometimes concurrent with a sense of a change in pressure in the head, neck and chest. Sometimes there is brief neck pain or head pain, like a pinched nerve. Sometimes there is a sense of heat and then cold that rushes through my chest, arms or hands. For at least a half an hour afterwards there is a sense of unease. They almost always happen when I am sitting in a way that is somehow confined and bent somewhat forward, like my office chair or while driving. They can also happen when I am lying on my stomach, which also involves pressure. Sometimes a dry or bitter taste in the mouth accompanies the worst of them. I have noticed that often I have a sudden presence of mucus in my chest/throat/sinus concurrent with the episodes. I was diagnosed with GERD shortly after I began having the symptoms. I strongly suspect they are somehow a response to reflux in the esophagus or some other mechanism of GERD.

I get almost the same symptom set, but without any pain and mostly when I am either lying down or driving. I also have GERD. I recently went off proton pump inhibitors after 6 months straight. Had a really scary night a week ago with head rushes every time I started to fall asleep. I also spend too much time with my neck in a crunched position at the computer. I have had my heart checked out - all is okay there. I have had thyroid problems in the past, but not recently. I sometimes wonder if menopause is involved.

So, neck or stomach or hormones? I have never experienced anxiety symptoms in my life. I am 53.

i was the original poster who started this thread. funny, so much has happened since i wrote it. these "rushes" started happening again recently so i consulted dr google! :)

And i came across my own thread. So in the end i was diagnosed with POTS, but i must stress "dizzyness" is so subjective with so many causes not sure that we are all talking about the same thing.

POT's dizzyness for me was not what i described in the OP, 2 very different things. The hallmark symptom i get with these rushes is what feels like a little jolt of adrenalin at the same time. Actually havent them for ages until recently with the trigger being, guess what.... stress! of the pro longed variety.

I am more conscious of my breathing now and cant rule out that poor breathing is a contributor, because the rushes happen when i'm stressed. However i have been on a high dose ppi for ages and i'm gradually tapering off now, very slight reduction in dosage - and at the same time more of these rushes.

that's why i quoted the post above. as the poster stopped the PPIs she got the adrenaline rushes/dizzyness

My best guess for cause in my case - stress + changes in GI system = Adrenaline rushes and sudden dizzyness. often cured for me by eating and removal of stressor.

The GI/ENT system is very very complicated and on a neuro endocrine level not all that well understood. There are countless stories of peoples struggles coming off PPIs, it's very very hard, and combined with stress it's a nightmare. I wish you all well with your health, these rushes for me settled when i sorted my diet and constant stressors out, and i hope they will resolve again as GI environment becomes accustomed to life without PPIs.
