For me it's usually 2-3 beers....I have been prescribed Xanex and Paxil, didn't really care for the Paxil's side effects and I seem to save my Xanex for really bad days. So I usually drink 2-3 beers never more than 6. What I have learned is that as long as I don't get too buttered off the beer I don't have the hang over which flares up the anxiety and the heart pounding. This usually calms me down most of the times. Does this work for anyone else?

Yep. You're not alone.

As terrible as it sounds, I've choosen beer over Xanax. I was also prescribed Prozac but quit taking that after 5 days of horrible nightmares.

A few beers completely knocks out my anxiety, yet doesn't make me zombie-like, like Xanax does.

Do you think it's beer specifically or the alcohol that helps? I don't like beer but I might try a glass of wine or a shot of tequila. I am weaning off Zoloft and often wait too long to take Xanex.

Hi

Good to meet you. Alcohol is a depressant which is why it lessons anxiety and I did used to self medicate with alcohol but for me it made my problems much much worse I now try and avoid alcohol.

If you are taking medications the advise is to not drink alcohol as they do not interact well. This can be difficult so if you are going to drink keep it to a small amount say 1-2 drinks but much better not to drink at all .

Hibee
I try not to worry about the future -- so I take each day just one anxiety attack at a time.

Hello and welcome,

I agree with Hibee re alcohol being a depressant.  IMHO Beer is not the answer to anxiety but dealing with what is causing your anxiety would be your best bet.

No judgement intended here.  :-)

Yeah, I would never mix the two, just saying the last few nights when I'm jonesing I prefer 2-3 beers over taking the zannys...Although I've heard you can have a really good party on 1 xanex and 2 beers..haha. Hell, I hate taking meds period.

Alcohol is a short term depressant, but an internediate term stimulant. 2 drinks are not likely to cause rebound anxiety, but  3 or 4 might.

From my personal knowledge base and studies, in the drugs pantheon, alcohol is classed as a depressant, along with barbiturates, tranquillizers and anesthetics. However, its effects are somewhat biphasic - at low doses, it acts as a mild stimulent. As concentrations in the bloodstream increase, stimulation gives way to sedation, stupor, coma and finally death.

Just FYI.
