Your Mom sounds like a pretty wise lady and I suspect she is right - anxiety can cause many physical sx and one of those is chest pain.
Chest pain can be caused by both anxiety and panic attacks, and may be a result of hyperventilation.
When you feel like you are over breathing take a deep breath in, and hold it for about five to ten seconds before releasing it. Get up and start walking around, to serve as a distraction and lower your respiratory rate.
