This started 2 nights ago. I'll sleep like 2 hrs then wake up around this time with tightness/ pressure in my jaw. Also my lips and tongue feel numb for a few seconds. Sometimes I feel I can't breathe. I don't know what this is. Is it anxiety related? I do suffer from anxiety sometimes but only at night. I don't know if it's because I stress, overthinking things but I'm scared I can't sleep now. This never happened to me before. Anyone experience this jaw pressure, feeling like you can't breathe, numbness, tightness in chest, tingly lips ..Ivs been sleepless for 2 nights

Hi Hillary,

And welcome to HealingWell.

Insomnia can be an indication of many different conditions, anxiety being just one. Please be aware that the human body can only go for a certain amount of time without sleep. Your brain needs to reboot through sleep.

I'd suggest contacting your doctor and finding out what's at the bottom of this. The doctor needs to determine not only if you're experiencing insomnia in and of itself, but also why? What's the cause of it? That cause needs to be addressed, and the sooner the better.

Let us know how you make out!

Hi Hillary and welcome,

I second Merrida's suggestion of bringing this up with your doctor.

There are a few thing that you may want to rule out, such as bruxism during sleep (teeth grinding) sleep apnea...and of course you will want to disuss treatment options for the anxiety if it turns out to be that is what you are dealing with.

Until you can get in, here are some suggested stress relied exercises and coping skills. Practice them daily, and especially before bedtime....they should bring some relief.

I don't know anything about numbness, but clenching you're jaw may be causing the jaw pain. That used to happen to me too.

Because grinding often occurs during sleep, most people are unaware that they grind their teeth. However, a dull, constant headache or sore jaw is a telltale symptom of bruxism.

If stress is causing you to grind your teeth, ask your doctor or dentist about options to reduce your stress. Attending stress counseling, starting an exercise program, seeing a physical therapist, or obtaining a prescription for muscle relaxants are among some of the options that may be offered.

I third Merrida's suggestion of bringing your issues  up with your doctor.

Kindly,

Kitt
