Hello all, I am about to start taking Lexapro 5mg and I was wondering if people have experience adverse reactions when taking a low dose of Lexapro? I've read other discussion boards and it seems at a higher dose there seems to be more reaction to the the two, but I was wondering what people have experienced on the lower dose amounts? Thank you in advance for your feedback and insight.

Dave, just my personal opinion and experience.
I fought this problem for years, some drugs will kick your but mixed with alcohol some don't mine always
seemed to not work like i was use to them performing. My guess is that any drug or med that alters thought
or thinking is just not compatible with alcohol, i just gave up, i did socialize but the club most of us used
had a cool bartender, i told her "no mater what i order give me straight ginger ale", it worked fine and i
never had to explain to anyone why i wasnt drinking, Peace

Hi Dave and welcome,

The general consensus is that imbibing while taking an SSRI is ill advised...

The alcohol can reduce the effectiveness of the Rx, and the Rx can increase the effects of the alcohol...double whammy.

However, limited amounts are considered acceptable by some doctors. You will have to consult yours, and ultimately make your decision on whether it is worth it to you to try mixing the occasional drink with your med.

Wishing you wellness and anytime for support!

Welcome to the forum good to meet you.

I was on Lexapro a few years ago and did have the occasional drink without to much problem but like the others have mentioned it is best to avoid alcohol whilst taking an ssri.

Here's what I've found, and this is just my experience, so don't take this as gospel:

I can get very drunk while taking Lexapro (20mg) and have a blast. BUT, I would recommend, for now, not taking any alcohol. You're just starting Lexapro, so you want it to get in your system and help you, getting you back to normal conditions FIRST, as that's most important. After that and during a check-up with your doctor, ask him/her about alcohol and go from there.

In my case, I've been on it for years, and besides a goof a few weeks ago when I forgot it during a vacation and starting feeling symptoms, I've felt great -- my "normal self" -- for the same amount of time I've been taking the medication. I can say when I first started, I didn't drink, and ever since my goof a few weeks ago, I haven't taken a drink either. Gotta play it safe, and as I said, consult with your doctor once you're feeling better.

I take Lexapro 5mg. I will tell you that I have a lot more of an "up" feeling when I do not drink any alcohol. However, I am pretty ok when I have a glass of wine or two. Or a beer. If I drink something with hard liquor, I limit myself to one drink only.
