Medication is a personal choice...and there are always risks associated with taking any medication...even an aspirin will list possible
complications. Does that mean that it is likely to happen? No...but again, it is a personal choice to make that decision.
Another consideration is what else has one tried first? For me, therapy/self help was sufficient to treat my panic disorder...but I consider myself very fortunate in that regard, and know that not everyone has the same needs...and I therefore fully understand and support that many people need an Rx to treat their anxiety...just as a diabetic needs insulin!
So, if you have tried therapy and self help, and still find yourself in need of medication, I think you would be doing yourself a disservice not to consider this option...to fully manage your health needs and feel your best.
