I read about a kid who said he couldn't stop swallowing saliva. I found I have the same problem. I can't stop swallowing spit. Choking on my own words. I think it might be nerves and stress so I'm trying not to focus on such problems as much. If my mouth isn't overly active with a drool or what feels like a pool of saliva I have to swallow down or I'll choke on it and sometimes my throat just feels tight and I have to swallow constantly sometimes back to back like I'm trying so hard to get down what's coming up in my throat. My throat gets tight and I feel like I'm about to choke it drives me insane one time I was so embarrassed by it that I wanted to commit suicide I'm doing anything I can to not focus on it. Anybody who has some advice or would like to comment please do so. If you have the same problem also respond. Here's another thing sometimes my mouth and body I feel like I'm dying like cardiac arrest and I can taste blood in my mouth then my throat starts to itch and I make a sound to clear it up and I'll suck so hard I'll suck my throat so hard that when I spit the saliva out It's blood and it's unexplainable I think it's like Tourette's Syndrome. I sound like a bullfrog when I do the sucking trying to clear my throat.

I also had a point in my life where everything must have been getting to me I became obsessed that something was wrong with me and I had my mom take me too the e.r. almost everyday I couldn't stop feeling like I was having a panic attack. I also was ****** a lot and I think that experience was getting out of control I might have been over doing it cause I think that that feeling of sex of orgasm is the feeling I'm feeling most of the time where you can't control it and you just want to scream out and I can't feel like that all the time.

I also use to illegal substance which is a chemical from air conditioners it freezes your lungs and that's the feeling I get when I *** like my lungs are frozen I don't know why sex doesn't feel good do they have a thread for that I'm going to make one about ****, e.d., and not enjoying sex.

You need to review the forum rules before further posting. Do this now please. Posting about sex is fine, as long as PG-13 wording is used. Illegal drugs should not be named specifically, and only mentioned in pertaining to how they have affected your anxiety.

Hi BRPR,

I am sorry to hear you are struggling with these issues. I know how distressing anxiety symptoms and manifestations can be. :/

It sounds like a couple of related issues going on here...

...assuming any physical reasons behind these symptoms have been ruled out...I do think they are both caused/exacerbated by anxiety.

The excess saliva (and conversely a dry mouth) can be anxiety manifesting itself...as can the swallowing issues. Did you ever see the old Scooby Doo cartoons...where Scooby or Shaggy would get scared...and ***GULP***!? It is that well known of a thing!

The other issue...the clearing of your throat, sounds like a habit or nervous tic that has come about because of the perceived feeling of globus...or something stuck in your throat. Again, this is assuming that you are not experiencing anything like allergies/post nasal drip...so get that checked out if you've not done so already.

So let's say this IS all anxiety related...what are you doing currently for help? Do you practice self help coping skills daily to manage the anxiety? If not, I urge you to start doing so. Practicing stress relieving exercises daily will make a difference in how you feel.

See our Resources for info and links to sites that work. smile

Post with us anytime as well. We understand, care and support is key!

I am curious. I have the EXACT same problem as the opening poster. My throat feels tight, and I have the need to gulp. This has started (of all days) this holiday weekend, and now I can't stop. I want to know if this is psychological or physiological so it can be properly diagnosed. I pray to God Almighty that this can be cured, and it is physiological. I would love to ask the opening poster, what ever came about your condition that I also have? Did it resolve on its own, and can it be stopped permanently. I had this problem a few times in the past, but it went away by itself. This time, it's not going away. It's almost like Mind Control...

On another note, it can be very helpful if you're around people. Because this sort of takes your attention away from the desire to gulp. All replies are GREATLY appreciated.

Hi Conqueror and welcome!

I am sorry, we have not heard back from the OP since the time of the first post...however, we are glad to support and help you in any way we can!

If you have had a recent check up with your doctor, and no physical reason for your symptoms have been found, then you can most likely safely assume that this is indeed anxiety related...and focus your energy on management tools for relief.

Please see our Resources at the top of the main forum page here for great self help material. The 'Stress Relieving Exercises' will be a great place to start. Practicing the suggested techniques daily will start to make a difference in how you feel.

If you feel you need further help, you can talk to your doctor about other options, such as medication and/or therapy.

Keep us posted and start a new thread for yourself at anytime, so we can officially welcome you. smile

Thank you so much for responding. I just made a doctor's appt for today to see if the physician can diagnose the cause. Previously, my Psychiatrist had prescribed me Neurontin and Seroquel, but it only makes things worse. I stopped taking those meds to see if it is possibly a side effect. As of now, my Psychiatirst prescribed me Escitalopram. The only downside is that it takes about a month for it to take full effect, and I'm not even certain if it will work. And each day is debilitating and takes all my mental strength to get through each day. I hope the opening poster is ok, because I heard that this can drive someone insane, and possibly suicidal. And I get what he's experiencing. I'll get back to you after my doctors appt today.

C.,

Perhaps you can ask your doctor about a low dose benzodiazepine temporarily, just during your SSRI start up?

This will help with your symptoms...and with any challenges you experience during the window of time it takes for your new med to reach therapeutic levels.

OMG, I feel almost 100% better. My physician prescribed me Ondansetron for nausea and the knot in my throat, which is probably the cause of my nausea. Worked very well. Then my Psychiatrist prescribed me Seroquel, but it's only to taper off because he said that Seroquel may have been the culprit that caused the incessant gulping. He also prescribed me Clonazepam for severe panic attacks while tapering off of the Seroquel. Works wonders too. My mind is now rarely thinking about gulping. 90% better now. Also, the opening poster more than likely suffer from a physical condition with all the blood, choking, and saliva. This doesn't seem psychological. Anyway, I wish him the best.

This is great news Conqueror! I am so glad that you got the help that you needed...well done!

Keep us updated anytime, and continue to share in the support here if you find it helpful. smile

(p.s. regarding the OP...he had some illegal substance issues going on that were likely adding to both his anxiety/panic...and also surely not helping his physical health. sad I do hope he got the recommended help for both these issues!)
