I got an upcoming interview and I'm very nervous and anxious.

I haven't interviewed in years. I dislike interviews. What's worse is I wear my emotions on my sleeve. I don't have a poker face, and you can read every emotions on my face, including nervousness.

My anxiety is starting again to make matters worse.

FP, if this makes you feel any better, just about everyone feels nervous at job interviews. So you're not the only one.

No you aren't the only one.. I use to be so nervous on job interviews. I haven't had one in over ten years. I am glad.

But you will do fine. Once things get rolling. We have total faith in you. You'll get through it.

Hang in there,

Hugs, Karen...

One way to become less nervous about job interviews (as well as being less nervous during job interviews) is to take part in lots of job interviews. Doing that a lot can calm you down, as you get more used to it.

FP,

Congratulations on getting the interview to begin with! Don't forget that this in and of itself is a great step...and tells you that you already have the qualities that the company you are hoping to work for wants!

Here are a couple of other coping skills to help get you through the process with the least amount of anxiety.

*Envision a good outcome! When the anxious thoughts combat them with positive mantras and imagining everything going extremely well at your interview. Picturing yourself as confident, professional and engaging will go a long way in ensuring that it is so!

*Be prepared. Know exactly where you are going and give yourself extra time to get ready and get there so that you are relaxed and not rushed when you arrive. Look up online a list of typical interview questions that most employers use during an interview, so you can be ready with a thoughtful answer rather than be put on the spot. Have your resume/paperwork together and in a convenient spot ready to go the night before. Get a good night's sleep and a good breakfast the morning of.

*If you do get caught off guard by a question posed to you, don't be afraid to give yourself some time to answer thoughtfully, rather than saying 'I don't know', or just blurting something unintended out. I used to get thrown off guard by this as I like to process things before giving my response. I learned to say 'That is a good question, let me think about that a moment.' This gave me a little time to get my thoughts in order.

Finally, be confident in yourself and your abilities! This will impress your interviewer and may even help to put them at ease...allowing the whole flow of the conversation to go really well. smile

Best wishes, and let us know how it goes okay?

I can relate as I also hate job interviews but as others have said the more you do them the more comfortable you get.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Hibee
I try not to worry about the future -- so I take each day just one anxiety attack at a time.

All my best to you FP!
I know how you feel.
I haven't even had the courage to submit my resume because I am afraid of interviews or not being contacted at all.
Please let us know how it goes.
My thought process is telling me if I get myself into a hard interview situation and I fail; I probably would not want to work in a place like that anyway.

I'm so annoyed right now.

I'm trying to get my references together, for upcoming interview, and I ask my 'supervisor' at the place I volunteer at for one.

My supervisor told me that they will have to see what the policy is first. To say that I'm extremely annoyed is an understatement. I am not getting paid for any of the work I've done, but they have to ask first?!?!

I don't understand stand this. I figured you would automatically give a reference to someone who is doing free work for you.

Sorry just needed to vent.

It seems like it would be natural for them to give a reference- who can figure?
Just found out that my manager from my longest employment passed away, now who will I use as a reference.....
It's so hard

Weary,

Are you in contact with a former colleague? Maybe, you can use them as a reference.

I'm so mad about the whole situation that I won't do anymore volunteer work at their organization if they say no or don't receive a response. The whole thing has left a bad taste in my mouth, and Im not sure if I'll keep volunteering there even if I do get a reference.

FP,

I completely understand your feelings...it seems like a very normal thing to write someone a reference in any sort of situation where you have worked for a facility...as a paid position or not!

I am sorry you are having to deal with this on top of all the other things that are on your mind at the moment...

...but try not to let it affect you, and just keep your eye on the prize!

I don't blame you FP. Maybe they just have some strange policy- sounds strange.
Hopefully they will give you a good reference when it's all said and done.
I do have a colleague I can reach out to.
Now I just have to get up the guts to pursue work.

Hi everyone,

Well, I had my interview. I thought it went well, and it helped that the interviewer had a welcoming personality.

Their doing rounds of interviews, and I don't know if I advanced yet.

The only, and major, issue is the pay. The salary is extremely low, and my mom is telling me I should forget about this job if they make me an offer.

I honestly don't know how I would feel if they made me an offer. On the one hand, I really like the organization and am desperate to switch careers. However, I have a lot of debt and bills- I need to survive financially.

Sigh...I guess one day at a time.

FP,

First of all wonderful news regarding your interview going well! Amazing job of not only getting through it, but doing so well that you feel confident about it!

Secondly, I hope that a clear path becomes apparent in what you should do as far as your choices for employment go. I say don't worry about what anyone else thinks or says...and go with what YOU ultimately want to do. You will be the one working there for many hours of your week...and your happiness and job satisfaction are what matters in the end. smile

Again well done, and sending positive vibes for a great outcome!

Thanks S.C. and Weary,

What made the difference was the interviewer's attitude. She was very welcoming and had a 'mother' persona.

It has encourage me to send out more resumes which I have to revamp.
