Hello, Its been a long time since I posted in here. I'm going through horrible anxiety. It all started 4 days ago. I over ate foods I shouldn't have eaten. Which caused me piercing pain in my chest like stabbing. That left me 4-5 hours of Panic attack. Now for a couple of days I have a sore chest. it hurts. Not sure if its from tensing up from my panic attack. I did go to the dr. who assured me its not my heart and I have had test done in the past on my heart that were all normal and considering my age 39 she is not worried about my heart. but cant seem to believe. I'm worried its my heart because of this constant pain I have in my chest. Does anyone have a sore chest after a panic attack for days and what do you do to ease it?? please help.

You may have pulled some muscles by tensing up during the panic attack. If the doctor said that your heart is normal, then I would believe that.

Panic attacks can give us some very real symptoms that lead us to believe the worst. Try to relax. Do some breathing exercises if you can.

I don't know if there is a lot you can do to ease the pain other than wait for it to subside. If a person gets broken ribs there isn't much they can do for that either. Being the location and the type of bones. I think in a day or so you will be feeling better with the pain. When we get tense, we pull muscles. I hope that is all it is. Hang in there bambola2nv. I hope you feel better soon.

Hugs, Karen...

bambola, I have been going through severe anxiety and I can tell you that I have a spot in the middle of the chest that hurts at times when anxiety starts. (I've also had a series of heart tests to rule out heart problems.) The doctor told me muscles will get tight or stiffen up because of anxiety and that's the pain I feel. Now that I know this it helps me feel better. It's a long road though, I know. I realize that when I'm in that anxious state I tend to think of the worst so I don't believe the tests. It's good to have an outlet to vent and relate how you feel. It's safe here because most people understand what you're going through. I find that if I can get myself involved in other things, outside or with other activities I won't dwell on this and that helps me.

How are you doing now?

My chest still sore it comes and goes. I wish this place had a chat. They use to have a place people can chat live with. It helps so much instead of waiting for responses

Hi Bam and welcome back, although I am sorry it is due to returning symptoms and anxiety.

I you had some heartburn from eating the trigger foods a few days back...it can take some time for the pain to subside. Did you try using an OTC med for relief?

Also what everyone above has said is true. Anxiety/panic can cause thoracic muscles to become sore due to overuse (hyperventilation) and tensing up.

I have experienced this, and I can assure you it will go away.

Try your best to trust your doctor, and remember that a heart issue would not be an isolated symptom, but rather a whole group of them.

Work your coping skills to keep your anxiety managed and I am sure you will be feeling relief soon.

Keep us updated so we can keep you in support!

Bam have you tried alternating heat & cold packs to your chest? This may give you some relief with the soreness.

I hope it gets better soon.

Bam,

Yes, I have experienced this symptom...and it is a really common one actually.

So know that this is not an unusual way to feel due to anxiety/panic. Your anxious mind is trying to get you to attach some frightening reason as to why you are feeling the way you are, but use some positive mantras and Therapy Worksheets (see Resources) to combat this.

The cartilage (connective tissue) around the ribs can become inflamed (Costochondritis) and take some time to heal.

Rest and no lifting is the recommended treatment.
