As someone with mental illness, I've seen lots of psychotherapists over the years. I felt that some were better than others.

However, their was one counselor I saw briefly who was perhaps the worst therapist I ever worked with, in my opinion.

When I'd tell her what my issues were at the time during our therapy sessions, she'd give me a little bit of advice. And then the next thing I knew, we were talking about sports, current events, or the weather.

I wasn't there to shoot the bull with her. I was there to do therapy.

I only saw her for a few sessions. Then I decided to move on and work with a better shrink instead.

I believe that it's okay to shoot the bull with your counselor a little bit once in a while. But not all of the time.

I think it's weird that this therapist didn't recognize that she talked about things during therapy with me that had nothing to do with my mental health issues way too much.

Not long after I stopped working with her, she retired. Probably just as well.

I’ve been to several therapists as well. My confusion comes in when they are concerned more about my spouse than me!!
Yes, there are some great therapists and I give them props but, when you are paying for counseling the least the person can do, as the therapist, is be completely on board with the concerns of the patient!
Glad you posted this.... Sad to know it’s a real thing!!

Hi

I agree as I have also seen good and bad therapists so it’s important to find one that you are comfortable with and feel that you can work with them.

I try not to worry about the future -- so I take each day just one anxiety attack at a time.

Yep it happens. Sometimes it is required but as mike said not constantly. It is a fine line. As someone on the other side of the fence....shooting the breeze is sometimes a necessity....but not constantly. Time n place....a definite skill...not properly taught or even taught these days.

Cheers. HT.

I agree Mike. Both therapist and patient have responsibility to stay focused and on-topic.
