What never fails to bring me into the "now" (and out of spiraling anxiety) is paying attention to what is right in front of me - that is what is real - not what is happening in my head or in my thinking at that moment. As the well known spiritual guide, Eckhart Tolle, says: "You should give up 'waiting'. Waiting is a state of mind. Basically, it means that you want the future, you don't want the present". When you catch yourself waiting, even if it's just standing in a line, snap out of it. Find some pleasure in the present moment.
