I posted this on another forum, and I'm not sure why I didn't post it here first.

I'm interested in hearing about the experiences of people who've been on benzos long term (more than a year).

How long have you been using them?
Which drug?
At what doses have you taken it?
What is your opinion, overall (efficacy, side effects, tolerance are of particular concern to me)?

Please note that I'm not interested in this turning into a pro- or anti-benzo debate. I'd like to hear only from people who've taken them for around a year or more, preferably daily.

I'd really appreciate responses. Thanks!

I just took 1mg of clonazepam daily for at least 8 months, just went down to 0.75mg a day and it took about 4 days for me to be ridiclously anxious and panicky just like I was before treatment

I've taken alprazolam (xanax) for about 15 years on and off...mostly on.  For many years I took .25 mg each morning, then went down to half of that each morning.  Last Oct/Nov.  started a bad setback for me and my doc. upped my dose to  'up to 1 mg a day as needed'.  There were days that I took all four of those .25 mg pills and a couple of times took a half or whole more than that!  Now I'm back down to a pill and a half of the .25 when I first get up and then another .25 around 10 am.  I'm planning on lowering the dose over time, but not sure if I will ever completely get off of the stuff.  It used to worry me, but now I know I need it and that's all that matters.  For me, it has been a life saver, it's the only thing at times that will stop the panic attack and during really bad times keeps me more balanced with the anxiety.  It's also just a comfort knowing I have it to use if a panic attack starts, though I've had a few panic attacks the last couple of weeks and have talked my way out of it and have not reached for the pills...good sign, I suppose, but I always know I've got em if I need em!  I don't have any side effects from them, and they take the panic/anxiety away within about half an hour, so very effective for me.  Hope this helps!

Ive heard of anxiety sufferers taking high doses for 30 or m0re years with no problems

the sedation effect if initally present usually stops eventually but the med keeps working

New to the boards. Have terminated my meds 2 months ago after 5 years and just wanted touch base with some. Daily, I was on 200 Mg Zoloft, Xanax - 1-2 Mg and Ambien when needed. I weaned very quickly (have tried 3 times with out good results.

Being on the Xanax didn't seem to be a problem, however I did find that the less I took the more effective it was. The last year I was probably doing .5 - 1 mg and not every day.

Good health!
