I've read that people with anxiety/panic often fear going crazy but that it doesn't happen.  But, what if you are going crazy in addition of having the anxiety/panic?  I'm really afraid of this lately.  How can I be sure that I'm not losing it?  I'm having a hard time settling my thoughts and am feeling like I can't sit still.  I don't want to take my Ativan for fear that it will just be masking the fact that I'm actually crazy and need help.  (I'm not suicidal or anything like that, just scared.)
Help me, please.

People who are "crazy" do not know they are crazy. They do not believe they are doing anything out of the ordinary and are not aware of their lack of touch with reality. Since you're so preoccupied with it and you're fearing that you're going crazy then chances are you aren't crazy. You wouldn't even let the thought enter your mind if you truly were insane. I also feared that I was going crazy when I had my first panic attack. It's very normal. No worries. Hang in there!

i agree with silver. if you were truely "crazy" then you wouldnt be worried about it. you would be oblivious to the fact that you were acting differnetly. the fact that you think your crazy is just showing that its just the anxiety talking. its putting one more thing in you head to worry and stress you about.

or do what i do to stop worrying about being "crazy" i say i am and thats what the pills are for to make me not. so then i dont worry. just a thought and hope i dont break a rule there.

Thanks for the replies.  I've also just received a test kit to get all my hormones (thyroid, etc.) checked.  I'm really hoping that some of the anxiety/panic issues are related to some imbalance there.  It's very hard to get doctors to pursue things thoroughly (I've had stuff going on for years that I'd like to get to the bottom of).

Sometimes I just feel like I'm skating along the edge of "crazy" and I'll go over someday!

Dear Resting,

When you say "crazy" are you referring to :

  1. Mentally deranged.
  2. Not exhibiting sound judgment; irrational.

There are many diagnosis under the Mental Illness category and I don't think crazy is you must not be crazy. yeah

Good to hear you are having some lab work and pehaps you will find out you need a different medication.

Try to stay in the moment and not let your mind wander down the road to what you might be.

Hi resting, I just spent 20minutes at my pdocs yesterday crying with fear of losing it. He's given me more psychotherapy homework to test my theory.

I can say this easy to someone else but not to myself, if you were going psychotic you wouldn't know it. The fact you feel funny and build on it proves you know "something" is happening not a psychosis though.
