I am twenty-three years old, found a lump in the upper right quadrant of my right breast slightly lateral to the nipple. Saw the doctor today and he is very hopeful that it isn't cancer, but two of my family members have had it and died. He called for a sonogram, and after reading a little bit more about this procedure I am curious as to the accuracy of "false-positives". Please respond with any help.... Thanks....

A false negative would be much more devastating...to tell you it is nothing when it is something. Odds are quite high in your favor for it to be nothing. Lumpy breasts are common in women your age, and in general, 80% of lumps are benign. Only 5% of BC is inherited, so "running in your family" may or may not have an impact. How old were the women who had it and what relation are they to you?
As for a "false positive"...I would not worry. In my case, at age 30, the ultrasound was definitive, whereas the mammogram showed nothing. If the u/s looks like anything, they will biopsy it to be sure. In fact, you might ask about biopsy anyway...while the u/s is good, nothing is sure till you examine the cells.
Good for you for seeing your doctor! And don't let them turn you away just because you are "too young".

I sure cannot do any better than Lori answering your question. I had a benign lump at age 27, another at age 42, and was daignosed with very early breast cancer at age 8. Each time my lump was removed for diagnosis. It has now been eight years since my mastectomy and I am NED (No evidence of disease). I hope and pray that you will get a lumpectomy or biopsy and and be able to say it is B-9, too. But you need to have a pathological analysis to be sure. I will emphasize again Lori's last line, do not let them tell you "you are too young to have breast cancer". Be sure. Hugs MK
