3 days since I reduced PPI's

Just wanted to drop in and say I was brave enough to cut back on my PPI's 3 days ago. I was on 20 mg a day and I'm now taking only half the tablet.

I am feeling pretty ok actually. I have even eaten some of the foods that I normally would not touch such as a chinese take away and pastry (low fat though)! :-)

The foods which really bother me are hard grains - brown rice and bagels, so keeping off these fellas. My stomach has to work hard to digest them and I get too much acid. I am enjoying eating more fish/vegetables and baked/dried fruits.Lowering carbs helps a bit I think but I have some with each meal.

I will keep you posted with my progress. This GERD business is a tough one, but I'm fighting it head on now, I've had enough of the suffering.

Good luck to everyone

Hi. What brand of PPI are you taking?

I tried to stop taking prilosec(omeprazole) completely and after 6 days I started taking it again....I was so miserable despite of taking all kind of herbal stuff I bought. Maybe it's better to quit slowly and not cold turkey?

Best wishes.

I am taking the same PPI's. I definitely think you should cut back gradually so you don't get an overload of acid! It was my doctor's suggestion also.

Have you changed your diet at all Precious?

Best wishes

I did quit Nexium cold turkey and I'm trying some home remedies, which don't seem to be working yet.  I still have burning in my stomach and some burning in my throat.  I just got really tired of taking medication that I've been taking since August that isn't working!  I understand that if you take a spoonful of Apple Cider Vinegar and it makes the burning stop, then you have too little acid, not too much.  Has anyone ever heard that?
Yes.Too little stomach acid can cause the same symptoms as having too much acid.I think stomach acid declines as we get older so can be more common later in life.I also read though that swallowing acid products can cause damage to the throat in the long term. You can buy capsules instead.
Well it's day 9 of halving my tablets and I feel much better. Still slight symptoms but much improved. I am now sure that the PPI's were stopping the acid to such an extent that I had symptoms from too little acid and not enough enzymes to break down food.
I think I had the same problem as you Meowpuss. I am on day 14 without PPI's and I am feeling much better. I hope I have found my answer to getting better. I was feeling pretty sick a few weeks ago!
Excellent, it's great you are off them altogether. I tried to cut down my dosage even further yesterday but had such intense stomach pain. I wonder how you managed to quit the PPI's successfully without the bad symptoms coming back Jason?
Read my post about being off the PPI's and geeling better. I talk about all of the different things I am doing to feel beter. I'm not trying to be rude, just a lot of stuff to type. I hape you get better soon!!!
