31 Year old diabetic new to site, and a question

Hello everyone. I stumbled onto this sight and have enjoyed and learned alot from your posts. I was diagnosed at age 25 with type one diabetes. I was a textbook case. I had been feeling bad for a few months before seeing a doctor untill my brother (a nurse) took my sugar reading and it was over 600. The proceeding months of constant thirst and urinating had me honestly believing I was cursed. I was actually releaved that my feeling bad was due to diabetes. The first six months after being diagnosed left me scared as hell. I had read the many horror stories about the bad affects this disease can cause. Since then I have excersized (somewhat) regularly, and counting carbs is second nature. My hemogloban checks have mostly been good(a couple of excessive numbers from time to time). And I do my finger pricks about 4 to 5 times daily. Here is my question:For the last 9 years I was a HEAVY drinker. Six months ago I stopped, and haven't had alcohol since. My problem(if it is one) is all I really crave to drink now are diet sodas and coffee. All day this is what I drink. My eating habits (foodwise) and body pounds (145lbs) are good. I am just courious if alot of caffine and neutrasweet are really harmful or if they are an "acceptable" vise. confused Thanks for reading my post and I look forward to visiting this site often.
I too used to be a heavy drinker. Alot of people, including myself have subsituted soft drinks, coffee, ect. for the bottle of beer they used to always have in their hand.
As far as the sweetners, You will hear alot of different opions on all the different types of artificial sweetners. For me I also drink alot of diet colas and coffee and have no problem with them. all of mine are also caffeen free, but that is because of my Crohns.
When I first started using my "Fake" sweetners I was worried about it because of all the rumors about them. I have seen posts where some say they did have problems with them, but after doing alot of research on them and alot say they have caused cancer is lab rats, but the way I see it, if you inject enough of anything into any being it will cause problems. And to date there is not one documented case of a human getting cancer from it. So the way I figure it helps keep me away from the real stuff that will harm me alot faster is a good thing.
This is just my 2 cents worth take it or leave it. Find out what works for you and go for it.

Thanks! :-)
Hello Steve, I also drink LOTS of diet pop and coffee with splenda and I haven't had any problems. I also used both ( caffeine free) throughout my pregnancy and my daughter is also perfectly fine. I agree with Al, find out what works for you and go for it! Robyn
Hi Steve,
I want to say welcome, too! I've been using artificial sweeteners and caffeine for most of my adult life and that's realllllllllly long! I haven't seen any adverse effects except for the fins growing out of my head and the additional warts on my knees and elbows... Sorry, just kidding. Glad to make a new friend here but sorry for the reason. Take care.

Hi,

I have heard that aspartame and other sweeteners actually affect blood sugar levels - they can make your blood sugar levels go high. Also, I crave diet cola so I actually think they are a bit sinister but I can't stop drinking them!
My courisity is if all that diet soda and coffee can effect my kidnies or liver. skull (in the long run)BTW This is a great site!
