Could you share what adaptations you are currently using and the benefits they are producing?

hi Summer
I was following Stephen Buhner and read all his books etc - so have tried a lot of adaptogens.
rhodiola
ashwaghanda
eleuthero
licorice
astragalus
i think cordyceps is classed as an adaptogen
in all honestly the only one i have tried that has an effect that is strong enough to detect it on the day you take it is Eleuthero - and that is only at relatively high doses
i used it quite a lot when my fatigue was much worse in the first few years of getting ill with Lyme - at that time i was using mostly the very strong fluid extracts a few droppers full a day and at that dose you can feel the effects - like a less jittery type of stimulant - similar strength to a cup of coffee - but longer lasting and smoother
now i still use a mix of the following tinctures
ashwaghanda
rhodiola
eleuthero
approx. 4 to 5ml three times a day of the combined mixture
i don't really feel the effects at this dose but mainly continue as they are supposed to help the immune system recover over time
my view is that the potential downsides are small vs anything that can help improve immune function improves my chances of successful treatment - at least that was my reasoning
i hope its of some help
ill since Feb 2015 – Lyme (Armin), Mycoplasma Pn, suspected Bart
Bart now conclusively diagnosed by microscopy see https://tinyurl.com/2eatxxz7
60% recovered - most useful approaches:
=Wholefood Keto Diet
=Exercise – initially walking – now weights too
=Buhner Lyme herbs and co-infect herbs
=Immune modulation- Ivermectin and LDN
=Methylene Blue (Bart)
+T4 and T3 for thyroid

Licorice is good for raising wafer retention and bp. Rhodiola helped me some possibly with adrenal issues ... it just depends on what you're trying to fix
I used most of the ones Garzie mentioned at some point. I don’t remember noticing anything from them other than ashwaganda. It did seem to calm my system over time and help with sleep regularity.

I have tried several adaptogens, including:
Eleuthero (wiped me out - not what happens to most!)
Ashwagandha (helpful for feeling more regulated, have taken it for years, watch out for thyroid impacts)
Holy basil (tulsi) (made me feel agitated - not what happens to most!)
Rhodiola (made me feel agitated - not what happens to most!)
Licorice (raised blood pressure)
Cordyceps (subtle regulation improvement)
Reishi (subtle regulation improvement)
Schizandra (no noticeable change)
They have ranged from helpful to unnoticeable to completely intolerable even at subclinical doses. A lot depends on your system's level of sensitivity, reactivity, and depletion, as well as which symptoms you're trying to influence. Would you be open to saying more about what your needs are?
Adaptogens are tricky because they can have paradoxical effects, meaning for example that an herb that is generally used for calming might make an individual feel agitated, so I always recommend starting "low and slow" with a single drop of a liquid, if you are at all sensitive.
Lyme, Bartonella, Babesia, Mycoplasma, EBV
Mold, MCAS, POTS, CFS/ME, HPA axis
Herbs, DNRS, diet, nutrients, EOs

I am looking to even out my nervous system. It’s disheartening to see some can have a paradoxical effect or that you may have to take high doses which would be expensive to get some relief.
Thank you for your feedback.

toxic effects from 2 doses of Levaquin in 2008.....Xanax for 4 monrhs in 2008 (horrific withdrawal effects)......CDC positive for Lyme's in 2009 (prescribed 200 mg daily of doxycycline for 2 months........extreme fatigue, anxiety, decreased cognition, etc. and was becoming worse in 2012......tested for Lyme's through Igenix and was CDC positive.....treatment started 9/2012

its true that some people can be sensitive or even have paradoxical effects
but you shouldn't be disheartened - this is not just the case for adaptogens - it is in fact often the the case for many pharmaceutical medicines too - especially in this patient population
so its more a case that we are all just different to start with - and are then made further sensitive or reactive to many things by this chronic illness.
its worth experimenting to see what may suit your particular body and circumstances
adaptogens associated with nervous system calming effects are
-holy basil
-ashwagander
other herx or supplements you could experiment that also have calming effects are
-L theanine - my partner was suffering extreme anxiety attacks - especially the week before her period - and this helped her considerably
- magnesium threonate or glycinate - highly absorbable forms known to have relaxing effects
- pasque flower tincture - Stephen Buhner recommends a few drops each hour for acute anxiety ( also seemed to help my parner)
- Glycine - a few grams before bed can help calm the body down for sleep
all of these are very mild in my experience - so for instance to help go off to sleep i would combine several -
eg would take
150mg theanine
1000mg magnesium bi-glycinate
3000mg glycine
i hope its of some help

For evening out the nervous system, adaptogens are worth trying, even with the small chance that one might not be the right fit. In addition to the other alternatives Garzie mentioned, I'd also recommend CBD, chamomile, passionflower, and lemon balm.
That said, a lot of nervous system regulation needs to come from changes to thought patterns and behaviors, not just tinkering with chemistry using herbs or drugs. Even if a pathogen or toxin caused damage your nervous system, you still have a lot of power to regulate it through practices and approaches like mindfulness, exercise, yoga, limbic system retraining programs, somatic therapies, vagus nerve work, tapping (EFT), acupuncture, acupressure, breathwork, craniosacral therapy, mental health therapy (especially for underlying trauma), and lots of other modalities. For me, it wasn't until I took the difficult route of limbic system retraining and actively regulating my nervous system that my body was able to heal and reach remission. Herbs can nudge things in a better direction, but often other types of work are needed to turn a real corner.
Good luck with whatever you choose to try!
