I am/was on the Buhner protocol, I re-started the Andrographis because Stephen Buhner said he didn't believe it was the Andrographis that was causing my lessening of taste (not a total loss of taste). Well soon after re-starting the Andrographis it came back. I have stopped the Andrographis for now and continue to take the Cat's Claw which I have never had a bad reaction too. I may try to restart the Resveratrol at a later date, but thought this might be helpful to anyone else on, or thinking about the Buhner protocol. I would love to hear others experience with Andrographis, doses, positive effects/negative effects, etc.
Thanks, KO2001 symptoms started:
Tingling in fingers and toes both sides, not tested at that time for LD
2007 Summer tested pos. WB, diagnosed with LD, tested neg for co-infections thru Igenex
Abx - Doxy 100mg 2x/day for 3 weeks (before diagnosis)
Amoxicillin 1gm 2x/day for 1 month
Amoxicillin 1gm 3x/day with Probenecid 500mg 2x/day 5 months
Currently on Dr. Zhang's protocolstopped Zhang's after 6 months symptoms returned. Started Buhner's protocol May 2009
Thanks for the update KO-LD. I have only taken each of those supplements for a short time and then my doc changed up my protocol, so I'm glad I never had any bad reaction. My friend has taken andrograhis and resveratrol and seems to like them, but I don't think she was on them for long periods of time. Do they both have the "loss of taste" side effect? I've forgotten how long it took to happen, and how long to go away. I think I printed out your other thread awhile back, but of course my lyme brain does not recall which "stack of papers" I filed it in my "library".
The first time it happened was after I had built up to the 4pills 4x/day. I had been at that dose for over 1 week I think. I first stopped the Andrographis because that's what some of the herb experts I contacted thought it might be. When I finally found a way to reach Stephen Buhner personally he said it definately wasn't the Andrographis and was probably the Resveratrol, so I stopped that too. My tasted started to come back by that time and so I thought it was the Resveratrol. I then started up on the Andrograhis again and before I even got to the max dose it happened again. It's too bad because I was herxing on the protocol. He said it could take 4 weeks for your taste to come back. He said that it something like 2% of people taking Resveratrol that have that kind of reaction, but it sounds like he never had someone have that reaction taking the Andrographis. I guess I'm just "special" LOL.

I was taking Neuro Science GI Reset a few weeks after a friend of mine started the six week protocol. It contains 75mg of Andrographois. about four weeks into the protocol she experienced a complete loss of taste. The same thing happened with me around the same time line. We both lost our ability to taste so profoundly that it was impossible to taste the difference between a lemon or chocolate cake! While temporary, it took the better part of a month for the taste to come back completely! I asked the Neuro Science company that makes this product and while they are aware of this side effect, it is not mentioned on their literature anywhere. I struggled for weeks trying to find an answer as to my loss of taste and it was very upsetting! Fortunately I finally tracked down the cause of my taste loss and stopped taking the GI Reset. My friends taste has come back but since I was a few weeks behind her on the protocol, I am still waiting for mine to return.
I realize this post is dated. I also completely lost my sense of taste after using Andrographis. Can anyone provide more detail about how long before regaining it? it's been about a week and nothing yet...
Hello! It is 2017, and I have just lost my sense of taste too - I am on Bruhner's protocol, and have been taking Andrographis - 2 pills per day for a month, I think. I am quite worried. I stopped tasting salt and sugar. Not completely, but quite a bit. Did your sense of taste came back completely? How long did it take for it to come back? I am definitely stop taking Androprahis immediately.

JCM2127, it seems we got into the same troubles. So weird. I realized this yesterday, after asking for salt in Thai restaurant. Food is so bland now. I want my taste back! Looks like Androgaphis is a culprit. I love Buhner protocol so far, however, I may need to stop it all together.
I experienced loss of taste after taking the Japanese Knotweed tincture. I stopped it for a bit and my sense of taste came back within about a week. Eventually, I restarted it at a lower dose and did not have that issue. I've also taken the powder form without experiencing that issue.Sept 2015: Two months post-partum, neuropathy shows up out of the blue in leg. Add'l symptoms show up, including light sensitivity, anxiety, muscle twitching, joint pain and pulsatile tinnitus. May 2016: Find a nymph tick after a trip to MD. Learn about Lyme and consider the possibility I somehow already had it. June 2016-Current: Various abx, Buhner herbs (started Dec 2016)
I know these are old posts, but I appreciate you documenting this side effect of andrographis. I am experiencing a metallic taste that is totally putting me off wanting to eat or drink anything. I was taking it for a week, when it happened. Have you all gone on to a full recovery? I am very anxious about this.
sadly Anne has not posted anything since 2017 so is unlikely to reply
however regarding your concern - most herbal side effects are temporary and resolve after the herb is discontinued
nerves can be a little slow - for instance many people lost their sense of smell completely from COVID-19 - including me ( i know you said Taste and i am taking about smell - but most of what we taste actually happens in the nose ) - but this gradually returned for the vast majority of people affected.
in the case of COVID it is believed to be caused by direct infection and damage of the nerves - and it is known damaged nerves take a long time to regrow
but i suspect Andrographis is less likely to cause actual nerve damage - as this is not a documented side effect that i have ever come across despite the herb being in use for over 2000 years - and is more likely instead to have had some kind of anesthetising or desensitising effect that is likely to be much quicker to resolve -
