I usually post in chronic pain but one of my doctors put me on a new med called Arthrotec for pain. I was wondering if anyone here has used it and how well it worked.

Hi Mark .....Howie( hubby) takes the arthrotec and says it helps him really well and swears by them.......He has bad knees from when he played in the OHL.......It got so bad he had to give his second love up ( I am his first lol).......anyways I hope they work well for you too ........Take care and God Bless........Lyn

It seems that once again I am the king of side effects. I have been having lots of Nausea fatigue and just general tiredness plus a killer headache. I am going to call the doctor Monday but until then no more arthrotec for me

It was not providing any relief from the pain or stiffness. All I got was the side effects. The ones that are of the most concern are the Nausea fatigue and tirdness. The are signs of liver problems according to the cautions for Arthrotec. Now that I have been off it for a couple of days I already feel better. The thing that troubles me most with this is the doc put me on it because he didn't like my pain meds because he said they could be hard on the liver. Arthrotec's literature says that you should be monitored for liver problems after 4 to 6 weeks so where would there be any advantage for my live. It is supposed to be harder on the liver than my pain meds. Oh well enough venting I am just frustrated with this doc because he talked alot and didn't listen any and on top of that he is an immunologist, not my pcp (who handles all my pain meds) or my rhuemy who knows what is going on with my joints.

Hey Mark, you would think that the immunologist would have conferred (sp) with your PCP and rheumy... Are you going to see if you can see a different immunologist?

I am going to wait out the test results and then unless I change my mind I am going to either change if I need to continue to see an immunologist or just go back to my pcp and rhuemy if I don't need any follow up.

I went back to the immunologist this week and he didn't have any problem with my coming off the arthrotec. He did listen this trip which was a great improvement. He did tell me that I have the basis of an immune system but it is not doing much (that's a little scary). My Rhuemy also put me on a Ultram er this week. It is supposed to be a long acting pain med that is not narcotic. I am starting on the lowest does of 100 mg and can go up to 300 mg over 15 days. I have been on it for 5 days and tomorrow I am going up to 200 mg. It does seem to be helping but it is not controling the pain yet but I am at least hopeful.

Mark.....I am hoping this new med will help you out ...sorry about the other one ........Howie did have nausea with it but it did subside after a few days I dont think his was as bad as yours and he doesnt have an immune system problem so that could be it.......Take care and thanks for your always being here for me ...God Bless...Lyn

Hey Mark, I am happy to hear that the immunologist actually listened to you, some times that is what is the hardest part, getting the doc to listen.. Good luck on the new pain meds, hopefully the 200 mg dose will be better for you.. keep us posted! Duck

Much luck to you with the Ultram. I know many folks get adequate pain relief from it.
I'm trying to understand, but what is up with your immune system again? Is it overactive or are you immunosuppressed?
Some personal story with regards to the Ultram: I was taking them for joint pain along with Soma (for muscular pain as well) in 2002. Was terribly nauseous from the Ultram, but turns out I'm allergic to the tramadol comound that was in it...and I had Crohns (but didn't know), so the drug in itself was out of the question.(Ultrams, Ultracets...) I bled from it too (rectally) so if you have UC just be careful and "watchful" I suppose.
I know how bad it is when you have to run the gammet on all these meds & the pain is still not controlled.

Meds: Humira 40mg every 4 days; pred; Pentasa; Imuran; dilaudid; diazepam; Avinza 30mg; MiraLax & too many others.

I am immunosuppressed. the doc says I have teh basis of an immune system but it is not really doing much. the crazy thing is I am almost never sick and I am in and out of hospitals and nursing homes with my job. I don't have chrons or anything like it thankfully. Most of my pain comes from osteo arthritis and lots of bone spurs.
