Greetings to all;
New member here and I was wondering anyone has received EUFLEXXA Gel Shots (3) as a preventative treatment as an alternative to knee replacement..?? I had right knee surgery on Jan 2nd of this year and so far, have had to have my knee drained 6 times with the last extracting 110cc's of fluid. I had my left knee done 2 years ago with almost the same preoperative conditions, (partially torn meniscus and loaded w/arthritis) but was back to work within 3 weeks however my left knee, which had the same conditions prior to surgery has not responded in kind. I realize both, although similar in conditions, are different with regards to healing but honestly, I was not expecting such dramatic and differentiating results. On Monday of this week, i had my second of 3 Euflexxa shots, and although feeling a mildly better, was wondering if anyone else in the community has any experience using this drug and can provide any information about how you fared post injection would be beneficial and greatly appreciated.
Best Regards,
Michael
Hello & welcome to the forum. I hope that you get good results with your injections. Many years ago I had a similar medication on both of my knees. I have a long history of knee problems with 4 knee scopes on one knee because of meniscus tears & cleaning up some scar tissue & arthritis. The other knee I had a partial tear of the ACL. So, after both knees were done the dr said lets do these injections because next will be replacements. I had no interest in replacements. I did quite well after having them done, it was a series of 3 injections like yours. What helped me the most was getting into the swimming pool & exercising my knees. I have had a lot of PT over the years after these scopes & by far the water helped me more than anything I think. Being weightless I had no fear of injuring either knee. Now, many orthos recommend aqua therapy to their knee patients. It took a couple of months for me to be able to tell a real difference. Now, during the summer I still get in the pool & exercise them. Keep in mind, not everyone has the same results but if possible get in a pool.
Take care.

Susie... Thank you so much for your reply and my gym does have a pool but I've been hesitant thinking as not to do any further damage. Now with that said, your positive reply about the drug/shots and your own experience in "pool therapy", will get me in the pool and perhaps you can provide a few exercises you did as part of your own therapy, I would be very great full.
A bit of personal info: I'm 68 years old, married in relatively good health and active normally at least in the summer time. I retired 5 years ago but tend bar 4 days a week at a golf course. I also play golf 3-4 times per week and up until this recent knee surgery, walk all 18 holes whenever I play.
I had my EUFLEXXA second short yesterday and already can feel a difference. I honestly can't wait for the 3rd shot which is scheduled for next Monday. I am scheduled to leave for a vacation visiting my brother in California March 29th with fishing, golf and other activities on the agenda and really hope my knee will hold up enough to make the trip and partake in all planned activities.
Again, my sincerest thanks for your reply and helpful information and I'll definitely stay in touch with regards to my progress and continued rehabilitation.
GOD Bless and warmest regards,
Michael

Michael, I looked online & found some exercises to do in water. Much of it is isometric type exercises in water to the waist. I also sit on a noodle & do what I call leg/knee kicks around the pool, lol. Strengthening the quads & getting movement back in my knees was really incredible. When I first started doing this I could hardly bend my knees & trying to squat was out of question. I ended up having my tub taken out in the bathroom & had a large shower with a bench installed. I was falling trying to get in & out of the tub far too often.
My neighbor next door was an avid dirt bike racer. He crashed & broke both wrists & tore the meniscus in one knee. His ortho had him start water therapy immediately to avoid surgery. He handed him a sheet with exercises & said if you will do these you can avoid surgery. He did his therapy in my pool as it would have been silly to spend money when he had access to my pool. He did great.
I would discuss this with the surgeon on the next visit. I will be surprised if he doesn't have a sheet of exercises. Several months back a friend of mine had a 3 level back fusion at the age of 69. That is a big surgery & her surgeon had her in water therapy 6 weeks after surgery. She said it was fantastic because it helped build up her muscles. After that she did regular PT for 6 weeks. She swears had it not for being put in water first her results would not have been near as good as they are. She was traveling 6 months out from surgery. She joined a YMCA & keeps up with water exercises.
Go enjoy your trip. Take care.

Hello Michael.
Had one knee replaced and the other has torn miniscus and been treating with water therapy and zero gravity treadmill. Pt has done wonders so far as well as spring shoes takes the psi off knees some what like water therapy . So far so good 7 years managed to avoid TKR.
I have heard of the gel and other types of injections to help with knee issues. Never tried any but had my knees drained several times. The latest knee injection clinical study I read about seems promising depending on what stage OA or injury is in at the time of treatment seems hopeful.
At the moment another drug is being tested in clinical studies for osteoarthritis of the knee/hip but it may work in arthritis in other areas of the body as well. I ran across a drug called Pentosan. Been on the market for years my horses were treated with it many times over the years. It can cure osteoarthritis is very good news for the massive amount of aging OA Patients. Most of the studies on knees/hips have stopped the progression of OA and changed the way the disease progresses. Also in some studies has helped the tissue LINING in the joint and also in other studies have shown repaired torn meniscus. In many cases knee & hip replacement has been prevented . I don't want to get my hopes up too much...maybe our children will have better options.
Good luck .
