I'm graduating today!
I just wrote an email to the director of my program, the man who interviewed me and took a chance on this old drunk. He is a very special man, and I've been happy to see his career advance these past seven (eight???) years to director. He'll be there to give me my degree, and I'll probably fall apart. He's seen me through a divorce, an engagement, which broke, a whirlwind romance ending in marriage, a pregnancy, a move to a town 100+ miles away, that commute to school with an infant, and finally breast cancer. All while trying to maintain full time student status!!!! He was counselor and mentor to me. I hope my email really reaches him, I really tried to make it say something. I couldn't have done this without his support and encouragement. He said "If anyone can do it, Ellen can." when I told him I was going to finish my degree and have the baby at the same time.
OK, I really need to sleep (HA HA) I'm crying now. Wish me luck tomorrow that I don't completely fall apart.

At my daughter's graduation last week, the dean announced that everyone of these people had worked hard for their degrees. And he was of the opinion that if anyone wanted to applaud, stomp, whoo-hoo, or anything else as each person's name was called, do it.
So, Ellen, after what you have gone through, if you want to have a good cry, you go right ahead. Maybe if you cry it out before you go, you might find it easier to control at the graduation, but I doubt it.
