Bipolar and associated conditions

Hi everyone,

My daughter was recently diagnosed with bipolar and has other problems that are stress related, TMJ and IBS. Does anyone else have these issues and do you think they are related to bipolar itself or just stress. I've been reading through the boards trying to gain as much knowledge as I can, any help would be appreciated.

Hi Kimber!  From all the reading I've done I think it could be related because bipolar has a lot of stress attached to it and it's hard on your body.  I have tentatively been diagnosed by my gp and am waiting to see a pdoc.  I have been a tooth grinder/clencher since I was a little girl which causes TMJ problems.  I've have ground my teeth down pretty bad.  I get all kinds of other problems like lumps in my throat, and just generally feeling ill.

I'm very sorry your daughter has been diagnosed.  It is a terrible illness and hard on everyone.  I wish you and her the best.

Hi Kimber
I too, clench my teeth and have TMJ issues. I believe hypo/manic phases especially are very stressful and have a great impact on our bodies. Depression can make me feel tired and generally ill, worn down etc, and no doubt stressful, but hypo/manic is like I'm burning myself up from the inside out. Just completely worn out and unable to stop even when exhausted. Sometimes I feel like my whole body is clenched, not just my teeth, lol. Very stressful.
I'm sorry about your daughters dx. It can be alot of trial and error in the beginning with meds, but once they figure out what works for her, (and it's different for almost everyone), it's quite treatable.
Take Care and have a good day
Ellie

Good judgement comes from experience and alot of that comes from bad judgement.

Thank you Crissi and Ellie for your replies. I feel so badly for her with all her emotional and physical pain. I do hope in time they will find something that will make her feel better.

Hugs to all,
Kimber

Hi Kimber.. I have Bi-Polar and TMJ.. the irritable bowel syndrom is something I also have but I think it's mostly part of fibro in my case because that's when it all started; after I developped FMA.

Anyway, what I have found helpful for at least the IBS is Metamucil.. Hope this helps.
Kimber..

Something I find important to mention about your daughters TMJ.. try to get a flate bite plane for her to wear at night to avoid the wearing of her teeth and to alleviate stress on her joints.

I was told by a doctor that when he has patients with TMJ he knows to treat them agressively because they soon will develop fibromyalgia. (he says they ofter come hand in hand). Try looking into treatment for tmj but please go with the non-evasive treatments.. they are reversible and often are more effective than evasive treatments. I speak with experience on this one. As well, coming from a teacher at the university in Toronto. Look him up if you wish; he seems to have very good credentials. Dr. Harold Tennenbaum is his name.

I hope you find the answers your looking for.. take care!
Thank you Soulsbreath,

Her dentist just referred her to an orthodontist, I'm hoping that he will make her a night guard before trying any evasive procedures. Thanks for the suggestion!

no problem kimber..I was told also that braces were not a good idea because they move the jaw joints. That's what happend to me after getting 2 bite planes that moved my jaw.. I developped osteoarthritis in the jaw joints.

Good luck with that..
