We finally got results on the cultures from the bronchoscopy: atypical tuberculosis. Believe it or not, that is good news! That's what the doctors were hoping for since this is treatable and curable. This form is also not contagious. Apparently, when your immune system is compromised such as by chemo or HIV, you are susceptible to this infection. These bacteria are always present in the air, but healthy people are resistant to them. When your immune system is supressed like mine is with long term use of methotrexate for rheumatoid arthritis, you can get this infection. My pulmonary doctor started me on a TB drug regimen (4 antibiotics!) and we cancelled the lung biopsy. My doctor at Sloan Kettering is pleased with this news, too! We are going to repeat the CT scan in 6 weeks. Hopefully, we should see an improvement by then. Thank you for helping me through this! L&H, Frayda

Did you have any coughing or phlem before checking this out? I'm asking because I have my own little lung issue going on. Yesterday I saw my Onc and he is concerned about a morning cough I have been having for awhile. I did a repeat Xray yesterday and we'll see what's up. The last one showed "interstitial changes". Was yours anything like that?

Thank you everyone! I met with the infectious disease doctor yesterday. He reassured me that I am not contagious and explained how my surpressed immune system allowed this bacteria to grow in my lungs. He said it can be a stubborn infection and will need to take all the antibiotics for a year at least. Who would think I would be thrilled with TB! Now I have to meet with my rheumatologist and adjust my arthritis meds. I am looking foward to visiting my son and his fiance in Boston this weekend with a clear head! L&H, Frayda

When I had the nasty MRSA I was on some antibiotics for over a year, so I feel for you with this treatment, but getting the bacteria under control and out of there is important.
